Amlin’s dazzling moto perpetuo brilliantly weaves together a pair of trumpets, at times playing in harmony, at times spelling each other through subtle dovetailing of phrases, and always maintaining excitement through a self-refreshing thrill ride. Mercurial rhythmic groupings keep listeners (and performers) on their toes, particularly with a soundscape of piano interjections suggesting a pulse where we least expect it. This 4½-minute gem is for advanced players.

Sonata for Solo Violin

Lauren Bernofsky

Merion Music, Inc.

Violin

144-40753 - $12.99

See Inside (JPG)

A violinist herself, Lauren Bernofsky has described SONATA FOR SOLO VIOLIN as drawn from autobiographical inspiration, including gestures from Bach’s beloved Partita in E Major. Bernofsky opens with a Preludio movement whose references to Bach may be disguised, but they are surely lurking. The second movement is lusciously contrapuntal with the idiomatic finesse of a violinist composing for her own instrument, while musically journaling the emotional pain of living through 2020. The third and final movement is aptly marked “white-hot,” and the music certainly is. A recording of the sonata may be heard at https://open.spotify.com/track/5N6PSy56TUrlasYkK9C3tQ

Theodore Presser Company

Trumpet in Bb, Piano

114-41741 - Score and Parts - $24.99

See Inside (JPG)

Ewazen’s SONATA NO. 2 is a striking exception to the trumpet sonata literature and the composer’s own extensive catalog of trumpet music. Following a mysterious offstage cadenza, the soloist walks onstage for an expansive Lacrimoso movement. After a perky, energetic second movement, the 18-minute work concludes with another slow movement, bearing an optimistic spirit. Ewazen has noted this is a sonata for our time and a prayer for a life once again at peace.

Drawing inspiration from Neil Peart’s autobiographical book, “Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road,” Garrop’s work grieves the loss of a friend’s young son and the journey to healing. ROAD WARRIOR’s evocative movement titles are drawn from passages in Peart’s book: 1. I Am the Ghost Rider 2. My Little Baby Soul 3. Are You With Me Here?

Theme and Variations on "Draw the Sacred Circle Closer"

Adolphus Hailstork

Theodore Presser Company

Viola

114-42398 - $11.99

See Inside (JPG)

Originally composed for solo cello, this work has been adapted by the composer in response to requests from violists. The melodic theme comes from the final chorus of Hailstork’s Earthrise, a profoundly bold cantata using Schiller’s “Ode to Joy” as text, and full of allusions to all four movements of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. Hailstork’s Earthrise features a festival chorus singing in German, alternating with an African American chorus singing in English with vernacular verve. The two choirs ultimately unite to end the cantata together with “Draw the Sacred Circle Closer,” a translation of lines from Schiller’s “Ode to Joy.”

YangKo, an important form of mass folk-dance that originated in northern China, has recently become popular throughout the entire country. In YangKo, the performers not only dance, but they play rhythmic patterns on drums that hang around their waists throughout the performance. In my piece, YangKo, the percussionists invoke a warm scene of YangKo dancing in the distance. Over that background, the solo viola plays a sweet and gracious melodic line imitating the song of a beautiful girl. This piece was adapted from the second movement of my Chinese Folk Dance Suite for violin and orchestra. – Chen Yi

The composer adds that “the name of a dear friend, departed suddenly and before her time in 2021, appears multiple times in musical acrostic form.”

This piece scored for clarinet, guitar, and cello was commissioned by the Curtis Institute of Music in 2013. The pun in the title hints at the way the three performers wander in and out of focus with one another: at times, playing in time together, at others, not in time. Featuring unusual instrumentation and 20th-century styles, this ten-minute composition requires a high level of precision among the performers, particularly in instances where all parts converge.

This epic work is is a musical depiction of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life: from birth, to adolescence, to adulthood, to his marriage to Coretta Scott, to his missionary work, to his assassination and finally to his afterlife. Scored for SATB Chorus, four vocal soloists, narrator, and orchestra, the 40-minute piece consists of 16 movements. This is the first engraved edition of the vocal score with piano reduction. Undine Moore became the first African American woman composer to earn a Pulitzer Prize nomination for the original orchestra score. Moore drew the text from various sources, including the Bible and spiritual songs. While the piece does not follow any particular form or structure, the musical styles change from beginning to end, corresponding to King’s growth. The piece starts with settings of spirituals (representing his mother singing to him), very straightforward and accessible. Once the piece moves into King’s adulthood, styles change and become more individualistic, more personal for the composer, and more idiomatic of 20th century styles, particularly in terms of its harmonic vocabulary and orchestration.

"Theme, Variations and Finale was written for and dedicated to my dear friend Benjamin Verdery. Ben and I met when he was nineteen and one of my first college students. It was clear then that Ben was a unique talent and destined to become one of our great guitarists. He is now Professor of Classical Guitar at Yale University. For this piece I’ve tuned the third string to F sharp and the sixth string to D. This allowed me access to harmonies and sonorities that I’ve not before explored. Many were darker and more terse than the musical language I’m accustomed to. Especially intriguing was the combination of fretted notes up on the fingerboard on the lower strings, with higher open strings. The interval of a second, ascending, descending or both, is featured throughout each movement. " - Frederic Hand, composer

"A Joyful Noise" was originally commissioned for 2 F horns. The title comes from Psalm 100, which begins (in English) "Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!" In early 2022, composer Steven Rosenhaus followed up on a suggestion to make the music, originally for two horns and organ, available to more musicians; he rescored it for two euphoniums or trombones and band, changing nothing substantial except transposing the work to better fit the new ensemble. Though the 1st trumpet’s highest note is G and the range of the instruments stay pretty much within the range of a grade 3, the composition is quite syncopated, thus moving its grade level to a 4. This is a great work to explore these rhythms while staying within an accessible range for your band.

Rhapsody in Blue is one of his most famous works. This arrangement for band, without piano, is not a recreation of the original, but rather an exploration of many of the themes found in this composition. The piece is a homage to the actual Citadel (also known as the Cairo Citadel). It was built during the medieval Islamic-era fortification of Egypt by Salah ad-Din and developed further by subsequent Egyptian rulers.  The Citadel of Saladin was in use during some of the most significant events in Egyptian history, from the time it was constructed to the end of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, which was in power from the early nineteenth century until the 1952 revolution, when the modern Egyptian republic was born. It is written in C-minor. Only the 1st clarinet crosses the break, and the 1st trumpet’s highest note is F. The duration and some of the rhythms bring this work to an easy grade 3.

Imagine the feeling of being in a spooky forest, late at night. It's cold, dark, and around every corner you feel danger. You hear every noise every sound and wonder what creature it could be. This is a fun piece for your band written in d minor with some accidentals. It is a great piece to learn about the minor sound and have fun while doing so. The trumpet's highest note is D and only the 1st clarinets play over the break.

La Valiente is a rousing Spanish piece that combines flamenco, tango, and just plain fun that’s sure to be a bright spot on any group’s next concert. Written in d minor, it modulates approximately halfway through to a happier sounding F major, but as the piece concludes, students find themselves back in d minor. While there are quite a few accidentals, there are none within the piece by which students playing grade 3 music should be surprised, and they lend a nice authenticity to the sound.  1st trumpet’s highest note is G. 1st and 2nd clarinets, only, cross the break.

Your beginning band is going to love the excitement and adventure that comes from this piece. This is a nice introduction to the concert d minor scale without worrying about accidents. The range is very approachable for this grade level, with the trumpet's highest note being C and the clarinets not crossing the break. This allows for you to work on articulation and dynamics which will take this composition from nice to WOW!

Joachim Andersen, one of the great flute virtuosos of the 19th century, is known to flutists primarily for his etudes, which have become standard repertoire. That he was also able to write charming character pieces suitable for both concerts and lessons is proven yet again in his "Quatre Morceaux" Op. 62: 1. Cavatine, 2. Intermezzo, 3. Dans la gondole, 4. Sérénade d'amour, which now appears in a new setting in the Andersen series edited by the American flutist Kyle Dzapo.
