Commissioned by flutist John Solum and written in 1967, Aulos was premiered in 1971 by the Indiana University Chamber Orchestra, with John Solum acting as the soloist and Wolfgang Vaccano conducting. The work derives its name from the eponymous ancient Greek instrument, which was double-reeded and contained a two-piece pipe and finger holes. One piece contained a bag that allowed for a continuous sound, making it more akin to bagpipes than to the modern-day flute, while the other piece acted independently of the first. In Kay’s work, the texture of the supporting instruments act as the supporting, yet highly reactive drone, while the flute acts as the melodic piece.

Four Pieces for Flute solo were written upon a request from UE for the volume Flute Project, where five composers were supposed to collaborate with five well-known Flute players. Victoria Borisova-Ollas collaborated with Emmanuel Pahud. He sent a feed-back on the written music, which was very much appreciated. There are no special stories behind the titles of these 4 pieces. The titles of the Four Pieces are supposed to trigger the imagination of (young) players and their audience. The most often asked-for piece is Elegy: It has a more melodic character than the rest of the works, which are of more virtuoso character.

This short piece will require a lot of work to secure a rewarding performance. Within its thirty-two bars it covers a wide range of dynamics, and its harmonic language moves from a simple G minor to end on a D major chord but during this journey there are passages of dissonance and harmonic tension. Of note is the wide range of dynamics from ppp to ff throughout the piece. While starting slow and mysterious and in fact ending the same way as the music fades virtually to nothing, the anguish of the text is highlighted in bars seventeen to twenty-four with the climatic question “My God, why have you forsaken me” with the voices in very close harmony creating a great moment of dissonance. The string writing adds an effective supporting line to the choral parts and at the climatic point they play tremolo triplets which adds to the harmonic tension. Like the vocal parts they fade away at the end in their upper registers. This effective work is a great addition to the repertoire and will be suitable for performance especially at Easter both in the concert hall and as a motet for liturgical use.

With both its pentatonic tone material and specific sonority (harp, celeste), the music to Ich atmet’ einen linden Duft makes reference to Far-Eastern music as it was known around 1900. Its relatively static nature and the word play of ‘linden Duft’ (sweet fragrance) and ‘Lindenduft’ (lime tree fragrance) are clearly reminiscent of a haiku (and of course Das Lied von der Erde).

Liebst du um Schönheit was meant specifically for Alma Mahler. It is almost a justification of their relationship ‘in spite of’ the age gap, the problem of which Mahler was well aware of. It is probably not a coincidence that Mahler did not orchestrate the song – in other words did not ‘intend it for the public’ (Alma even protested – in vain – against Puttmann’s orchestral version).

Originally composed as music for four instruments without specifying the instrumentation, Pari intervallo was later arranged by Arvo Pärt for both organ and recorder quartet. Pari intervallo was one of seven works in Tintinnabuli style first performed in concert in 1976. These pieces mark the beginning of Pärt's new compositional process: called “Tintinnabuli”. The title of Pari intervallo (“at the same distance”) describes the new style quite accurately. It refers to the two strictly parallel pairs of voices, which always remain at the same distance.

In his Piano Sketchbook, Mike Cornick’s many inimitable styles shine through like a beacon. Several of the pieces were composed during the Covid lockdown and can only now be published. They are joined by two older compositions that he was delighted to find in some old files and the result is a delightful mixture of light musical fun. The opening piece, “Valse Mystique” is particularly fascinating, with not a single bar of this mystical waltz in the usual 3/4 metre; Mike prefers to alternate 5/4 and 6/4 bars. The second piece evokes the gentle swinging of a trapeze artist before we hear a jazz number, some more swing and two delightful tangos. All the pieces are short, none more than two pages and can be enjoyed by players of intermediate level.

Simple Gifts is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848, generally attributed to Elder Joseph Brackett from Alfred Shaker Village. This tune was almost unknown until Aaron Copland used the melody in the ballet Apalachian Spring first performed in 1944. Since then, it has become very popular and appears in many arrangements. This new arrangement by George Arthur is for 2 soprano voices and piano. This simple but effective setting is enhanced by introducing imitation in the melody between the two voice parts. The piano part is straightforward but includes references to the two-part writing of the melody by having three short bell-like interjections. The idea of turning is hinted at in the piano with the use of quavers towards the end of the piece. This setting would be suitable for all female choirs, but especially a children’s choir, who could probably perform the piece from memory.
