An American composer born in 1973, Amy Scurria has thus far been commissioned by such groups as the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Minnesota Orchestra (co-commission), the Vermont Youth Orchestra, Shepherd College in WV (where she was composer in residence), SHE (an a cappella women's choir in NYC dedicated to raising money for NYC charities through music), the Bryn Mawr (PA) Presbyterian Church, as well as others. Her music has been highlighted on WPRB, Princeton, NJ, and 90.7 FM in Kohlrobi, CA. She has been featured in many ways on the internet including the online publications New Music Box, Piano Lane, and Classical Net Review. Her music has been heard throughout the United States, Brazil (Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church Choir Brazil Tour), England and elsewhere around the world. In 1998, Beyond All Walking, her first orchestral work, won the Haddonfield Young Composers' Competition. Since then, she has also been the recipient of two annual ASCAP awards and winner of the N. VA Composition Competition.
Ms. Scurria has earned degrees in Music Composition from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University (B.M.) and the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins (M.M.). Her music will be included in TOPICAL GUIDE TO CLASSICAL MUSIC published by Scarecrow Press. Ms. Scurria believes that "Music is a powerful and unusual language that, when spoken well, can reach the deepest part of the human spirit."
