FIREFLY TRIPTYCH is the piece alto flute players have been waiting for! Amanda Harberg’s flute music and piccolo music have rapidly become new standards in the repertoire, which is also true of her music for other woodwinds. When news began spreading of an alto flute piece in the works, what had originated as a joint commission from two flutists grew into a consortium of 48 eager co-commissioners. The evocative movement titles Journey into Night, Invocation, and Midnight Jam set the scene for Harberg’s magic. A performance featuring the composer as pianist may be enjoyed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVn5FJcywUk

Charles Schulz was a big fan of Ellen Zwilich’s music, mentioning her premieres twice in Sunday PEANUTS® comic strips, including the first performance of Zwilich’s PEANUTS GALLERY® for Piano and Orchestra. The six-movement suite was composed as a concerto for young soloists, with movements depicting “Schroeder’s Beethoven Fantasy,” “Lullaby for Linus,” “Snoopy Does the Samba,” “Charlie Brown’s Lament,” “Lucy’s Freakout,” and “Peppermint Patty & Marcie Lead the Parade.” The original concerto version was later published for two pianos. The present edition was arranged by pianist Marc Peloquin, adapting the entire work for solo piano. Each movement may be performed separately, and while the music is provided in its concert order of movements, the music may also be learned in other orderings for graded study, as the six character pieces call for varying skill levels.

A SOLDIER’S JOURNEY is a short, patriotic medley of original fanfares and familiar tunes for solo trumpet and nine-piece brass ensemble. Incorporating the World War I era popular song “Over There” and “Taps,” A SOLDIER’S JOURNEY was premiered by Chris Gekker and The American Expeditionary Forces Headquarters Band at a WWI memorial in Washington, D.C. where “Taps” is played every night in honor of fallen service members. Ewazen’s piece concludes with the solo trumpet playing “Taps,” unaccompanied, as a special evocation of that tradition.

An inviting and novel work for solo trombone, solo bass trombone, and trombone sextet, the two movements of Samuel Adler’s TWO CHARACTER PIECES could not be more delightfully different from one another. In “Chanting Through Waves,” the soloists duet elegantly above passages of dovetailing arpeggios that roll up and down through the ensemble. “Waltzing with Glee” is a pleasantly quirky, lilting take on the familiar dance form.

The interviews address Jackson’s career and the prejudices she faced, the meanings behind the spirituals she sang, her hope for the future of the nation, and include a recording of her singing “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” on the air. All of this is vibrantly brought to bear on contemporary ears through Garrop’s innovative and personal writing for strings. (This product includes a download code to retrieve the audio components from the publisher’s website.)

“The first time I saw slipstreaming in action with professional cyclists, I was in awe,” says Stacy Garrop about the inspiration behind her composition SLIPSTREAM for clarinet, bass clarinet, and piano. Originally written for performers who are also avid cyclists, Garrop describes various kinds of cycling experiences depicted in the work’s three movements: “The piece opens with The Horizon Beckons. A cyclist hears an enticing call emanating from the mountains, then the cyclist starts pedaling towards the mountains in search of adventure. Riding Solo, the second movement, explores the quiet of riding alone, the beauty of the landscape, and the shifting of the light and clouds, all while we hear the bike’s wheels in constant motion. Adrenaline Rush, the third and final movement, depicts the heat of competition. We hear the constant jockeying of cyclists within a peloton as they slipstream with each other and move with the wind. At the very end of the movement, we hear sprinters race for the finish line with everything they have left in their legs.”

Released in honor of its 25th anniversary, this is CHASING DRAGONS as the composer originally conceived it. An enthusiastically embraced staple of the guitar ensemble repertoire in its familiar four-part scoring, Hawaiian composer Darin Au first wrote CHASING DRAGONS for guitar sextet, and reduced the number of parts after the 2000 premiere, making the piece accessible to more ensembles. Whether playing it for the first time or the fiftieth, guitarists will love to experience the beauty, invention, and excitement of CHASING DRAGONS in its original expression for guitar sextet.

Intermediate Pieces for Solo Harp

Volume 3

Marcel Tournier
ed. Carl Swanson, Catherine Michel

Carl Fischer Music

Harp

H86 - $19.99

See Inside (JPG)

Marcel Tournier (1879–1951) was one of the most important harpist/composers in the history of the harp. Over his long career, he added a significant catalogue of very beautiful works to the harp repertoire. Many of his solo works, almost one hundred, have been consistently in print since they were first published. But in recent years harpist Carl Swanson has discovered a treasure trove of pieces by Tournier heretofore unknown and unpublished. These include the Déchiffrages in this edition, as well as songs set for voice, harp, and string quartet, and ensemble arrangements of some of his most beloved works. All of the works that Carl Swanson found were in manuscript only. With the help of the great harpist Catherine Michel, he has put these pieces into playable form, and is publishing them for the very first time. He and Catherine often had to re-notate passages to show clearly how they could be played, adding fingerings and musical nuances, tempos, pedals, and pedal diagrams.Tournier wrote these pieces when he was in his twenties, and before he became the impressionistic composer those familiar with his work know so well. They are written in the late nineteenth-century romantic style that was being taught at that time at the Paris Conservatory. They are short, intermediate level pieces by a first-rate composer, and add much needed repertoire to that level of playing.

PE053 - $20.00

Equator Loops is based on a simple melodic idea that expands and contracts step-wise in a “mirror image” of itself around the note D in the very centre of the piano keyboard. Development is strictly organic – this single idea is used exclusively throughout the piece – and progresses in “waves” of fluctuating intensity. The composer’s decision to limit himself to such minimal germinal material lends the piece a hypnotic, even obsessive, feeling; interest is focused on the development of a demisemiquaver rhythmic motive and gradual expansion of the music into wider registers.

‘The Bells of Sainte-Genevieve du Mont de Paris’ is a work by Marin Marais written in 1723, originally for viol, violin and harpsichord with basso continuo.  The original is written as a passacaglia or chaconne.  This arrangement for clarinet/saxophone choir is a slightly shortened version of the original with rhythmic and melodic interest in all parts.  Considering this work is nearly 300 years old, this ensemble gives the music a surprisingly contemporary sound.

After the Sun is a tango-based composition that really explores the sonorities of this ensemble.  The opening replicates the sound of castanets and heel clicks, anticipating the energetic tango that will take place.  The driving rhythms are infectious and combined with contemporary, yet accessible, harmonies, this piece should provide a satisfying structure to the end.

All these Grieg favourites, arranged by Mike Cornick will be very familiar to pianists but perhaps not in this guise. Mike has arranged them for one piano, four hands, the ubiquitous piano duet that was so popular decades ago in the days before gramophones. The selection starts with possibly Grieg’s best known work, the theme of the second movement of the Piano Concerto. The fame of that music was, of course, helped by Morecambe, Wise and Previn but you will find no “right notes … in the wrong order” in Mike’s masterly arrangement. The book also contains pieces from Peer Gynt, Lyric Pieces and Two Elegiac Melodies and will be great material for intermediate players to present at a festival or concert. If you enjoy these arrangements, look for Mike’s book Elgar "Favourites" (UE021779) for the same combination.

Musical practice is permeated by valuation and judgment. Audiences judge performers and composers; performers dote on and honour certain works while disregarding others; composers respect audiences or despise them. How do such valuations come about? Why do some valuations prevail while others fade into oblivion? And which standards, if any, underlie them? Such matters must be explored ever anew, for established valuations lose credit just as fresh ones arise and spread. In 1968 Harald Kaufmann founded Studien zur Wertungsforschung, enlisting the resources of philosophical aesthetics for understanding questions such as these. Valuations, Kaufmann argued, are not mere opaque feelings lying outside the realm of reasoned dispute. Rather, valuations are amenable to and stand in need of reflection and argument. Human attitudes manifest a diversity of values. There may not be a single elevated stance - from which we are able to contemplate the entirety of musical values. On the other hand, abstaining from valuation, or pretending that valuation is beyond the realm of scholarly inquiry are no viable options for the study of music. To the contrary, inquiry into these subjects is a prerequisite for a full understanding of music.
