Duo Sonata

An exciting addition to the recital repertoire for A Clarinet and Piano, Peter Schickele’s DUO SONATA effortlessly blends tradition and spontaneous invention. One of the composer’s final works, the 15-minute sonata is a substantial addition to the literature, unfolding in four serious-yet-charming movements: Serenade, Scherzo, Cantilena, and a rollicking set of delightfully off-kilter Pirate Variations. Originally conceived for Basset Clarinet, the composer also prepared an A Clarinet version of the solo part to increase its reach. Both versions are elegantly presented in this edition as equally viable artistic options.
