The title of this work refers to three lines of poetic text from Pablo Neruda?s ?Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair,? selected by the composer as an imagistic source of inspiration for the composition. These extraordinary poems, written when Neruda was only nineteen years old, are powerfully evocative in their sense of longing, anguish, and desolation. The ?three lines? establish three musical sections, with the first and third each having short codetti attached. These sections all spring from a three note chromatic cell. Composer Felder has had a long standing interest in the poetry of Neruda, and has composed two other works inspired by it; "Coleccion Nocturna", a Double Concerto for clarinet doubling bass clarinet, piano, orchestra and tape, and Six Poems from Neruda?s ?Alturas...,? his largest work to date for full orchestra. The work is recorded on Bridge Records 49.
