Though Joshua's Boots itself is fiction, the background to the story is historically accurate, and parallels documented accounts of the great migration of former slaves from the post-Civil War south to non-Confederate states. A great number settled in Kansas, where many became cowboys. The plot follows a young Black boy who overcomes prejudice who overcomes obstacles to become a cowboy, earning himself a pair of new boots in the process.
