Lowell Liebermann's first major work for saxophone, the TRIO, Op. 137 for Flute, Alto Saxophone, and Piano, shimmers with elegant beauty for all three performers. The idiomatic writing for both wind players offers long streams of melodic richness interspersed with textural passagework. The alto sax stays within its traditional range except for a limited amount of cantabile altissimo in the evocative slow movement.
