World Premiere: Stacy Garrop’s Chariot of Helios for Wind Ensemble

Stacy Garrop’s work for wind ensemble Chariot of Helios had its World Premiere on Wednesday, April 28th, 2016 by the Chicago College of the Performing Arts Wind Ensemble directed by Steven Squires. The piece is an arrangement of a 2011 brass quintet piece titled Helios commissioned by the Gaudete Brass Quintet. The commission is part of a larger four movement piece entitled Legends of Olympus. Three additional movements of the piece will be premiered in October by the Gaudete Brass Quintet as part of University of Chicago Professor of Composition Augusta Read Thomas’ Ear Taxi Festival.

Stacy Garrop was recently interviewed in The Chicago Maroon, highlighting her career as a woman composer and studying with fellow Theodore Presser Company composer Shulamit Ran.

World Premiere: Amanda Harberg’s Sadie’s Birthday Adventure

This Saturday, April 30th, join us in celebrating Amanda Harberg’s premiere of Sadie’s Birthday Adventure, commissioned for the Philadelphia Orchestra’s interactive Sound All Around ensemble. Award-winning storyteller Charlotte Blake Alston will narrate Harberg’s six minute story of a puppy’s adventures before her birthday party.

The piece is part of 45 minute program that exposes children to new instruments, stories, and songs. Sound All Around has been awarded Philadelphia magazine’s Best of Philly® 2014–Best Music for Kids and concerts will be held in the Academy of Music Ballroom in Center City Philadelphia at the times listed below.

A Philadelphia native herself, Amanda Harberg’s work has been performed around the world by ensembles including the Grand Rapids Symphony, the National Symphony of Ecuador, the Thuringer Symphoniker, and the Olympia Philharmonic Society to name a few. Harberg has been acclaimed as a composer of “truly beautiful” and “hauntingly moving” music and has taught at Juilliard, Interlochen, the Luzerne Music Center and the ASTA Chamber Music Institute, along with maintaining an active private teaching studio since 1997. She currently lives in Glen Ridge NJ with her family where she is the founder and director of the Music in Montclair Series.
