Quick Overview

The "Variations for Viola and Nine Players", is dedicated to Walter Trampler, a dear, and longtime friend. The movements are as follows:
I. Variations
The first, second, and fourth variations each expose a different set of instruments with the solo viola. Variation three and the recapitulation exclude the solo viola. The coda combines chimes with the solo viola.

II. Scherzo with Trio and Coda
The Scherzo uses all the instruments in combination with the solo viola.

III. Chant
The solo viola is accompanied initially by all the instruments, but ends as a duo between the solo viola and the section viola. The final Coda is a repetition of the Coda of the first movement, combining solo viola and chimes.
