Quick Overview

Uses the normal symphonic instrumentation dived into eight separated groups. At these premiere performances, the entire string orchestra is placed on the stage at the audience?s left, the low woodwinds and the horns in separate locations on the right side of the stage. Forward of the stage, at one extreme side, are the bell-percussion and the other extreme side, in front of the stage is the timpanist. The piano is placed in the orchestra pit, near the bell-percussion. The three trumpets play from one side of the first balcony, the three trombones from the other. High woodwinds are located in the projection booth above and behind the top balcony, led by a separate conductor. Throughout the work each ensemble has its own special kind of music play; musical material is not passed from group to group, and the music of any one ensemble is not duplicated by another ensemble.
