Quick Overview

'Spank' will eventually form the finale of a four-movement piano-cycle. What these pieces have in common is that they each concentrate upon various playing-techniques which are partially derived from tradition, the piano-literature and partially from ethnic- and pop music. 'Spank' is largely constructed with two elements. One is derived from Cuban salsa-music, melodic patterns in "hammered" octaves, filled up with active inner voices and shifting accents. The other source originates from rock-music and consists of broad, loudly chanted chords and a pulsating bass. The idea for this arose on September 18 1990, the twentieth dying-day of Jimi Hendrix and can be regarded as a small tribute to this electric guitar-virtuoso. These two elements are being juxtaposed and interrelated with each other and gradually develop into new forms of appearance; they form the materials of which this approximately 11 minutes long wall of ecstatic piano-playing is built upon. - ROBERT ZUIDAM
