Quick Overview

Illuminations
for Orchestra

Illuminations is an attempt to portray, musically, the movements of light and fire. Most of its musical gestures, including a depiction of matches being lit, rise and fall, like fire being blown up and down by the wind. The long fading in and out of sustained notes portrays light moving around in space or passing us by. In its attempt to explore different kinds of energy, Illuminations exploits the paradoxical idea of slow music in fast tempo. Toward the end of the piece, as the music moves to its climax, the light becomes very bright, only to suddenly vanish.

Illuminations was graciously commissioned by the Beijing Modern Music Festival to celebrate its 10th Anniversary. It was given its first performance at the National Centre for Performing Arts by the NCPA Symphony Orchestra, LV Jia conducting, as part of the opening concert of the Beijing Modern Music Festival, 2012.
