Quick Overview

The Fantasia for Alto Saxophone is gratefully dedicated to my friend, saxophonist, Randy Smith and the Truman State University Wind Ensemble. This was my second solo piece featuring saxophone, having composed my Tenor Saxophone Concerto for James Houlik in 1993. But this was my first work for Alto Saxophone. This family of instruments so appeals to me. I have long felt that the saxophone is one of the closest instruments to the human voice, with its incredible dynamic range and its ability to sound
delicately nuanced or boldy dramatic. As such, in this one movement fantasia, I have had fun exploring this variety of beautiful musical colors which the instrument is so capable of producing. There are
moments, such as the very beginning and a recap towards the end, where the instrument floats delicately, times where the instrument sings with bold declamations, times when it is playfully rhythmic, and times when it is heroic and dramatic. The piece ultimately is a joyful celebration of all of these wonderful colors.
