Quick Overview

"Elegy for Strings" was composed in 1985. It presents a sorrowful melody in a variety of contexts. The main theme is introduced by the violas and remains essentially intact throughout the piece, yet the listener?s perception progresses through a variety of moods and texture. The form is organic and all of the musical materials are derived from the main theme.

This piece is a reflection on some of our most private feelings that may not be very happy and cheerful. Nevertheless, they are a very essential part of who we are and often could be very beautiful and soothing. It is my wish and hope that the performance of this piece would provide an opportunity for the listener to reflect on his or her own feelings and be a companion on this emotional journey.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the incomparable music director, my friend, Hyo Kang and the superb musicians of International Sejong Soloists.
