Quick Overview

It was Dennis Russell Davies' idea that I write a Concerto for Orchestra for the 25th Anniversary concert [of the American Composers Orchestra], in order to feature first-desk players as well as the orchestra itself. Many of the current members of the orchestra have been with the ACO since the first concert in 1977 and have become good friends. The Concerto was commissioned by my dear friend Paul Underwood, and is dedicated to him.

The actual composition began in June 2000 and was completed in August 2001.
A short Andante introduction leads to an Allegro molto, con brio in quintuple time. A brief Andante cantabile, for contrast, leads back into a loud and fast ending. The slow second movement is marked Adagietto. It is in five-part song form, with two faster sections for contrast. Many solo instruments are featured. The third movement, "Scherzo bobistico", is scored for just brass quintet, percussion, and solo double bass, and is a deliberate effort to embrace the 1950s bebop feeling through fast legato lines with off-beat accents so typical of that style. The fourth movement, like the first, opens with an Andante introduction leading into an Allegro con brio, this time in 6/8 time. As in the first movement, this headlong feeling is interrupted by a slower Andante, which then brings us back to the 6/8 Allegro, which builds to a wild, fast ending with the entire orchestra playing in full volume. The work is roughly 25 minutes in duration.
