Kafka: Letter to My Father
music by Stanley Walden
libretto by Franz Kafka
the opera: Franz Kafka’s father had an overbearing influence on his life. In 1919, Kafka wrote a letter to his father, laying out his feelings and frustrations at the treatment his father subjected him to; the letter was never read by his father, and perhaps was not even intended to be. Through this specific relationship is expressed the complexity of many a parent-child relationship, with its expectations, disappointments and individual short-comings; but in spite of everything, there are strong, underlying family ties.
