In 1872, Victoria Woodhull ran for President against Ulysses S. Grant on the Equal Rights Party ticket. Her platform included women’s suffrage and many other much-needed social reforms, but also included the inflammatory issue of free love and equality between the sexes, which caused her to be branded “Mrs. Satan.” Today, nearly 130 years later, most of the issues considered controversial then are still hot topics.

Arthur Crew Inman was a Boston recluse who, in order to gain immortality, obsessively documented (in diaries that run to 155 volumes) the countless stories related to him by people whom he would pay in order to hear about their lives in intimate detail. He was especially interested in young women, and was known to have been sexually involved with several of them. He committed suicide in 1963.
