From the composer: “I composed Music for Saxophone and Piano for Harry Kinrose White in 1992. It is an early attempt in my work at magnifying the barriers between sound and silence, exploring the extreme ranges of pianissimo sounds in the saxophone that seem to appear without recognizable transition out of nothing. Glissandi, sliding tones, have always fascinated me, and in this piece I applied for the first time my ideas about pitch slides in a composition. These two qualities - the absence of a recognizable boundary between soft and inaudible sound, and the absence of a stationary pitch by employing glissandi - were soon to become something of a basis of my compositional aesthetic for many years. It was in Music for Saxophone and Piano that these ideas seem to have first germinated. The architecture of this piece employs a simple binary form, but the halves are stylistically diametrically opposed, creating a dialectical pair, the serene and elegiac character of the second half being born out of the high point and cathartic event of the first half. Curtis-Smith has a new champion in Utah's NOVA Chamber Music Series, under Artistic Director Jason Hardink. The ensemble plans to record The Complete Bowed Piano Works of Curtis-Smith, including Unisonics, which they performed in the 2012-2013 season with saxophonist Taimur Sullivan. The bowed piano is a technique first devised by Curtis-Smith, and later adopted by other composers of contemporary works, in which filaments (soldering wire, fishing line, etc.) are placed among the piano strings for special effects.

After an April 2013 performance, reviewer Edward Reichel wrote, "(W)onderfully crafted work...creating a 'oneness' of sound. It is interesting to hear how Curtis-Smith combines the two instruments and makes them sound as one while still maintaining each instrument’s coloristic uniqueness. Martin discusses his childhood fascination with composition, and eventual discovery of counterpoint, fugues, and canons. He was brought up short, upon learning that such composition was so out of favor at 1970-era Peabody. Even so, he created his third quartet, Canons, from his journals of those previous efforts. "These movements are titled Prelude, Episode I, Interlude, Aria, Episode II, and Meditation. There are canons, fugue-like pieces, and even some double canons. The seventh wind quartet was completed in 2002 and is fashioned after a childhood memory of a chaotic and impromptu music experience. "I remembered a children’s birthday party where several sisters, who had taken music lessons, were pushing each other off a piano bench in order to have a brief turn playing easy tunes. This artless ruckus turned out to be an exciting 'performance' despite being unplanned. The girls were laughing, pushing, shoving, struggling, even banging and pounding, while managing to render chopped-up tune fragments from pieces that were popular at the time." The opening melodic construct is a quiet, evolving affair, which reappears after a faster, lilting second movement, alternating again to end the piece as it began. Fantango No. 2 is a six-and-a-half-minute work for B-flat clarinet and piano in jazzy classical style, characteristic of the composer's more recent music. The title is a contraction of "fantastic tango," and as such it is at once rhythmically punchy and expressively melodic. The composer has built in an optional improvisatory section for the clarinetist that is ostensibly a 12-bar blues treatment of the work's main harmonic material. This option is excellent for both the classical player who is adept at jazz improvisation, and the classical clarinetist who may or may not be ready and willing to explore improvisation. Today’s klezmer music comprises a wide range of styles, extending from traditional ensemble music to crossover with jazz, pop and rock. This collection of ten arrangements from clarinetist and composer Helmut Hödl, contains popular melodies, such as Bei mir bist du schean, Havah Nagila, and Chiri Biri Bam, as well as lesser-known folk songs. When given the opportunity to commission a new work, the members of the Blair Woodwind Quintet chose Schickele, because of his multi-faceted catalog of works and especially his previous writing for wind instruments. Interestingly, Schickele felt somewhat challenged in composing for winds, more so than in previous ensemble works, such as for strings.
