The Andersen Etude Practice Book (2nd Edition)
Flute Studies

Worthen presents a studied, measured approach to the famous Andersen flute etudes, with a purposeful and instructional method. Rather than simply assigning these studies to learn the notes, Worthen digs deeper into the challenges that they bring and groups them into similar skill sets. Selecting studies from Op. 41, 21, 33, and 15, Worthen provides tips and advice throughout, while addressing musicianship along with the technical aspects of each group. New 2nd edition also includes a French translation; Japanese edition is available separately.

Back to School

Thomas Schuttenhelm
On the Verge of Remembrance

for Flute and Guitar

Three movement concert work by Connecticut composer Schuttenhelm, an accomplished guitarist in his own right. About the work, Falls House Press says, “Each movement explores an aspect of memory and uses it to drive the musical argument of the composition. The first movement, Moderato, is in ABA form. The second movement, Mysterioso, is in rondo form. The timbre of the guitar changes with each return, thus adding a distinct sound to each appearance: first pizzicato, then normal, and ending with a tamboura-violente. ...If the second movement represents the dynamic climax of the piece, the third and final movement is a release from all the tensions of the previous two. The guitar has an elegant, almost sentimental tremolo solo while the flute gently plays its haunting melody. It has a certain nostalgia to it, as it recalls some of the themes heard in the first two movements, and floats above the guitar with Ivesian reverence.”

Allen Krantz
Summer Music

for Flute (or Violin) and Guitar

Written for a 1992 concert in Philadelphia, “the Revolutionary War era setting inspired a piece that is generally pastoral in character and in a direct American style. The short prelude is followed by a dance with popular inflections and a contrasting trio section. The berceuse is a gently rocking lullaby. The piece concludes with a more extended movement in a concise sonata form,” says Krantz. In other words, a multifaceted work for accomplished duo, with shifting moods and landscapes, all with an underlying unity that ties everything together neatly in one very satisfying package.
