FLUTE 102: MASTERING THE BASICS
A Method and Solo Collection for the Intermediate Flutist
with Practicing and Phrasing Guides
By Patricia George & Phyllis Avidan Louke
Flute Method
The duo that brought us The Flute Scale Book and the acclaimed Flute 101: Mastering the Basics now expand the series with Flute 102: Mastering the Basics. For students approaching the intermediate skill level, George and Louke turn to the use of etudes, solo repertoire, and orchestral excerpts to build upon the lessons of Flute 101.Underlying the method are practicing and phrasing guides, invaluable for students and continued use thereafter.
From the authors: "Each of the units of Flute 102: Mastering the Basics includes five separate lessons of exercises and repertoire in a major key, relative or parallel minor key, or dominant key. The theoretical exercises feature scales, thirds, arpeggios and major/minor seventh chords, rhythm studies and etudes by Barret, Gariboldi, George, Louke, Soussmann, and Wohlfahrt. The Contemporary Techniques Solos at the end of the book may be used with any lesson to enrich the flutist’s study."

| “The title says it all: The Flute Scale Book - A Path to Artistry. The tenderest moments of music, the most emotional throes of passion, the most dazzling technical interpretation, all of what we love about the flute, have a common denominator: instrumental playing, also called technique. It is the thoroughness of this book that will help flutists of all levels achieve higher goals. It is “La Scala di Seta,” the Silken Scale (ladder) of the flute.” -- Michel Debost, Professor of Flute, Oberlin Conservatory;
Retired Professor of Flute, Paris Conservatoire National |
| “With inspiring quotes from Nadia Boulanger and loads of real world practical advice, The Flute Scale Book will help students turn scale practice from drudgery into creative exploration. I love the inclusion of many types of modal scales and the use of harmonic fingerings for embouchure development. The Flute Scale Book is a world in itself. Go, explore and enrich your playing!” -- Robert Dick, American flutist, composer, and author |
| “The Flute Scale Book creatively underscores the importance of thoughtful, artistically informed technical study -- a concept integral to fruitful practice, rewarding performances, and insightful pedagogy. This inspiring volume is an invaluable addition to the technical literature for our instrument.” -- Leone Buyse, Mullen Professor of Flute, Rice University |
| "Scale work is necessary and usually tedious, often getting abandoned to the flutist's autopilot. The Flute Scale Book contains so much diverse material that we'll NEVER have scale boredom again!" -- Alexa Still, Professor of Flute, Oberlin Conservatory |

| The flute consumes air faster than any other wind instrument except for the tuba. To explore the natural breathing mechanism, have the student practice headjoint activities while lying on the floor. Lying on the floor will not only help develop good body alignment, but will also illustrate the natural movement of the abdomen. Lying on the floor may also calm a wiggly young student! |
