Gary Schocker
Cherry Blossoms
Flute, Clarinet, Harp and String Quartet
Cherry Blossoms is a neo-romantic canvas that fuses English modal qualities with French post-impressionism, belying the Japanese implications of its title. Schocker uses the string quartet and the two woodwinds as blocks, taking full advantage of the range of timbres available from different instrumental families. Ultimately, however, Cherry Blossoms exploits the magical delicacy of harp, which emerges as a first among equals in this lush movement.

David Ward-Steinman
Incantation and Dance
Alto Flute, Fortified Piano (or Harpsichord)
Ward-Steinman originally wrote his Incantation and Dance for the great James Pellerite (who premiered the work), as an accompanied solo for the five-hole Native American flute. He found that this version for alto flute "takes advantage of its larger range and opens up the piece to new possibilities." The foritified piano uses a clave or wooden ruler to cover a range of strings, and is unchanged in this version. A chamber orchestra accompaniment is also available on rental. For advanced performers. Dur.: 6'

Ann Cameron Pearce
Cosmic Horizons
Flute Choir
Written in celebration of the Raleigh Area Flute Association’s 25th anniversary, Ann Cameron Pearce’s Cosmic Horizons for flute choir exemplifies the organization’s unofficial motto: “The sky is the limit.” The main theme evokes meteors zipping sporadically in different directions throughout the solar system with multiple meter changes, and the secondary theme suggests the mysterious nature of outer space, with the “star” being a singing bowl or handbell and wooden dowel. Valerie Coleman
Danza de la Mariposa
Flute
Valerie Coleman’s Danza de la Mariposa is a rhythmic, melodic tone poem, giving the listener a tour of South America. Inspired by the various species of butterflies inhabiting the continent, this work is full of rich color, with butterflies dancing and weaving in syncopated rhythms while alternating between the feel of 3 over 4 throughout. Its slower sections pay homage to the beautiful and sorrowful sounds in the style of Yaravi, a Peruvian lament song. The melodies and rhythm eventually evolve into the spirit and syncopation of Argentinean concert tango, and the conclusion returns to the feel of Yaravi. For advanced players. Dur.: 5’15”

Dionysiacs
Flute Sextet and 12 to 16 Extra Musicians
Permutations. Although ideally performed as flute choir (front and center stage) with two groups of various wind players distributed within the performance space, Dionysiacs is flexible enough to be performed by a lone soloist with pre-recorded ensemble, or select flute parts with augmenting pre-recorded tracks, or any number of variations. Best when performed live with the full complement, the score also calls for the "extra musicians" (or "gli altri") to have ocarinas, nose whistles, and other "instruments" handy, along with their primary wind instruments. Carter Pann
Duo
A commission from the Wozniak Duo (Lois Hicks-Wozniak, saxophone, and Matthew Wozniak, bass trombone) led the composer to fashion a two-movement synthesis of this dynamic couple. The movements ("Lyrical Lois" and "Chopper's Rag") are contrasting elements, as reflects the contrasting instruments, The first begins "with sweet serenity," before giving way to a passage "in the groove," with rythmic foot stomps. The second ("Mean!") starts with attitude, then solidity ("Kinda square"). The original alto saxophone and bass trombone duo is also available in Pann's transcription for flute and bass trombone. Camille Saint-Saëns
Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso
Arranged by Denis Bouriakov
Flute and Piano
Denis Bouriakov, an astounding talent and now Principal Flute of the Metropolitan Opera, looks outside the standard flute repertoire for works that would allow the flute to shine. We are pleased to present here his arrangement of a violin classic, as he performed it on a 2009 recording of violin repertoire transcribed for flute. In Bouriakov's hands, the classic Saint-Saëns becomes a showcase for the flute, with the new piano reduction by Daniel Dorff. Click here to listen to Bouriakov's performance of the Saint-Saëns with the Tokyo Wind Symphony Orchestra (YouTube), an example of how seamlessly the flute arrangement fits with existing band (or orchestra) settings of the original violin solo.

Liesa Norman
Mood Swingin’
Two Flutes and Piano with Optional Bass
Liesa Norman, one half of the innovative duo Forbidden Flutes, wrote this jazz-inspired classical crossover work for their 2008 recording Take the L Train. Mood Swingin’ is a moving and listenable addition to any flute recital, with a flexible format which allows it to be played by two flutes with a full rhythm section or simply by two flutes and piano. As a result, it could be played anywhere from an intimate jazz club to a formal concert hall. Mood Swingin’ represents the composer’s own broad range of personal expressiveness. Like the ever-changing artists’ moods, this piece is at once sultry, syncopated, and synergetic. Mood Swingin’ also serves as an excellent teaching tool for both student and professional flutists who want to develop their improvisation skills and jazz sensibilities. For intermediate to advanced players.

The distinguished trio Palisades Virtuosi have commissioned some 40 new works for flute, clarinet, and piano from the finest composers. Responding to such a request, Ewazen set about crafting his own reflection on the seasons of the year, only to realize that the work soon began to capture the seasons of our lives, as well. Sydney Hodkinson
Papillons, Book 1
Flute, Viola, and Harp
Subtitled "A Serenade of songs without words," Hodkinson's first set of Papillons was, he says, intended as a companion piece to the famous Debussy Sonate for the same forces. Expect no comparisions of the two works, however, as this set of seven "character-trio bagatelles" is purely Hodkinson's own. Completed in 1984, Papillons, Book I went on to garner second prize in the 1984 international composition contest sponsored by The American Harp Society. For advanced performers.

Liesa Norman
Purple Phobia
Two Flutes and Piano with Optional Bass
Inspired by Prokofiev’s Vision Fugitive for solo piano, jazz-inspired classical flute duo Forbidden Flutes’ Liesa Norman blends crunchy jazz harmonies with the Russian Master’s quixotic melodies to create this classical crossover flute duet. Accompanied by a full rhythm section, this composition gives each of the musicians an opportunity to experiment with improvisation in the solo sections, midway through the piece. Purple Phobia’s tongue-in-cheek title refers to Liesa’s aversion to the color that conversely happens to be the favorite of her Forbidden Flute partner. You can hear these dueling flutists dance through this piece’s sprightly rhythms and chase each other through playful articulated passages on their jazz-influenced classical recording, Take the L Train. For intermediate to advanced players.

Tom Turpin
St. Louis Rag
Arranged by Ann Cameron Pearce
Flute Choir
“Father of St. Louis Ragtime” Tom Turpin (1871-1922) was a St. Louis pianist and the keeper of the Rosebud Saloon, which was often frequented by Scott Joplin and other ragtime pioneers. Turpin was the first African-American to have ragtime music published, and this tune dates back to 1903. A detached style throughout along with exaggerated dynamics and accents make this piece great fun to perform, as well as an audience-pleaser. For intermediate to advanced players.

Ludwig van Beethoven
Scherzo from Symphony No. 6
Arranged by Anthony McDonald
Flute Choir
Part of a rare programmatic work by Beethoven, the “Scherzo” from his sixth symphony is meant to evoke a festive gathering of peasants. In the original symphony, this movement does not have a clear ending, giving away to an attacca into the next. Anthony McDonald has employed the last five measures from the scherzo to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 to serve as the ending in this edition. Joyous and quick, this piece will be a delight for audiences and players alike. For intermediate to advanced players.
