Barbara Siesel and Bruce Lazarus
The Green Golly Collection
(9 Classic Favorites)
Through their Green Golly Project (a Parents' Choice Gold Award winner), Barbara Siesel and Keith Torgan have created an entertaining and captivating first introduction to classical music for young children. In telling the story of Green Golly and Her Golden Flute, children hear, perhaps for the first time, a selection of classics that will stay with them for a lifetime. The performances inspire children to listen and learn to play, as well.
We are pleased to present The Green Golly Collection of 9 classic favorites, arranged by Bruce Lazarus, in two versions: Solo Flute with Flute Ensemble and Solo Flute with Piano. The solo flute part is identical in both versions. Play, share, enjoy!

Kokopelli
(Music for Flute Ensemble with Percussion)
Flute Choir with Percussion
While Raines made no attempt to write music of a Native American nature, there is no escaping the influence. Perhaps better described as a distillation of Native American music through the mind of the composer, Kokopelli follows the eons-long tradition of combining flutes and percussion, here having the flutists play simple percussion parts on easily accessible instruments. Out of Their Rinds
(Five Fresh Squeezed Citrus Soliloquies)
Flute Choir
Cohen presents five descriptive and varied miniatures for flute choir, inspired by a major food group. All parts of the choir are featured, from the low flutes in An Ugli Fruit Goes Bad to the piccolo in Lemon-Lime, So Sublime. The movements evoke a gigue, a "sinister dance," a hornpipe, a Celtic air, and end with the "bouncy and nautical" Voyage of the Clementines. Without questioning the underlying inspiration, the cycle gives better flute choirs the opportunity for a fun night out! For advanced performers.

Jay Reise
The Flight of the Red Sea Swallow
In this ballad, Reise ponders the Red Sea Swallow, of which only one was ever found (and dead, at that). The Flight of the Red Sea Swallow imagines the final flight of what may have been the last of its kind.
Tom Purdom of Broad Street Review: "Jay Reise described his Flight of the Red Sea Swallow as “something of a response” to Vaughan Williams’s well-loved The Lark Ascending. It offers the violinist the same opportunities for controlled emotional display, but it describes a more erratic trajectory than Vaughan Williams’s English lark, and it includes encounters with stormier, unpastoral weather.
"The Red Sea Swallow is an ornithological mystery. The only evidence that it exists is a single dead bird. Reise’s haunting opening and closing create a suitable frame for an ode to a creature that may have disappeared at the very moment we discovered it."
Originally written for violin and piano, and premiered by Maria Bachmann, Flight has also been transcribed for flute and piano. For advanced performers. Dur.: 17'

Robert Raines
A Quickening
Flute Choir and Percussion
From the composer: “This piece illustrates my continued interest in exploring the sonic landscape created by a group of instruments from the same family, an effect heightened by the purity of tone produced by the flutes. I have expanded this palette by adding the warmth of the marimba and vivid percussion colors. Extremes of range, tone, texture, and tempo are explored: dense vertical clusters juxtaposed with more horizontal, kaleidoscopic/contrapuntal passages. I have strived to give each member of the ensemble its own voice and a chance to stand alone, while in other sections all of the players are meant to meld into one macro-instrument. Those technical points aside, I strove to illustrate my personal feelings about the act of creation – music, literature, dance, the visual arts, all I believe share common creative electricity.
"I have long been inspired by the following words from Martha Graham, and I kept this quote near while composing this piece. The title is inspired by her words: ‘There is a vitality, a life force, an energy... a quickening... that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium but will be lost. It's not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. Whether you choose to take an art class, keep a journal, record your dreams, dance your story, or live each day from your own creative source, above all else, keep the channel open.’”
This work was made possible by a grant from the Brannen-Cooper Fund for New Music. Dur.: 12’

Sonata No. 2 for Flute and Piano
Flute and Piano
Eric Ewazen’s Sonata No. 2 for Flute and Piano rides on cosmopolitan sparkle inspired by a party atop Atlanta’s Hilton Towers, looking down at the city with live jazz in the background in celebration of concerts at the 1999 NFA convention. Composed for Sandra Lunte and Richard Seiler years later in 2011-12, Ewazen’s bold and dramatic second sonata is both a foil and a companion to the lyric and pastorale Sonata No. 1 (114-41442 - $18.95) from 2010-11.

Alberto Ginastera
Duo for Flute and Clarinet in A
Adapted by Daniel Dorff
Flute and Clarinet (in A)
Ginastera's Duo (1945) is familiar and standard repertoire for most flute and oboe duos. In three movements (Sonata, Pastorale, Fuga), the composer immediately found a welcoming audience in the United States, including Virgil Thomson, who proclaimed, "This is the kind of music which makes one believe and have confidence in the New World." Now, Daniel Dorff retains the original flute part, while transposing the oboe to clarinet in A with an ear for idiomatic accuracy. For advanced performers. Dur.: 8'30"

Concerto pour Flûte
Flute and Piano reduction
Marc-André Dalbavie’s beloved Concerto for Flute is now available as a solo with piano reduction, and was originally only available for solo flute and orchestra. Allmusic.com describes the concerto as "…a surprisingly lyrical work, full of elegant turns of phrase and impassioned melodies. Its harmonic language hovers between tonality and atonality, but its effect is largely post-Romantic; this is a work that offers strong and direct emotional appeal to audiences. Formally, it's fairly conventional, with fast-slow-fast movements that are played without a break, but its lyrical, sensuous slow section makes up about half of its length." For advanced players. -- Barbara Hopkins, The Flutist Quarterly, Summer 2013
"Wow, this is incredible - a true treatise of superb scholarship, beautiful layout, wonderful and relevant reproductions, and of course the music itself! Congratulations to you and Dean on this accomplishment."
-- Claudia Anderson, Principal Flute, Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra
"The examples of choreography are fascinating. The performance notes are so full of information, I'm sure I will use them many times, not only in relation to the Bach but also for other points of Baroque interpretation. ...A beautiful publication and an outstanding scholarly edition. The endnotes make a very useful bibliography! It's a fascinating exploration of a work that has more layers than one might suspect."
-- Susan Nelson, Instructor of Flute, Bemidji State University
"I am pleased to see it provides both a practical performance score and thought-provoking commentary. I also like the 'look' of the printing/cover."

This publication is part of The Flute Collection, which brings together a range of selected pieces from the international concert life of famous flautists, curated by internationally acclaimed flautist Emmanuel Pahud. The second volume of the collection presents Lensky’s Aria from Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin. This edition is based on an imaginative paraphrase of Carl Maria von Weber’s opera Der Freischütz by Claude-Paul Taffanel. Inspired by the new technical possibilities of the Böhm instrument, Taffanel founded the French school of flute playing, was a flautist and conductor at the Opéra-Comique in Paris and was a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. This publication is part of The Flute Collection, which brings together a range of selected pieces from the international concert life of famous flautists, curated by internationally acclaimed flautist Emmanuel Pahud. Jan Krzywicki
Five Lyrics
Flute and Piano
Krzywicki uses haiku-like poems by W. S. Merwin and authentic haiku by the great Japanese poet Basho to create five evocative movements, each descriptive of a bird(s) in nature at a particular time of day, the succession creating a dawn-to-moonlight cycle. While not directly quoting a given bird's song, hints can be heard throughout. Master flutist Jeffrey Khaner, who premiered the work in Philadelphia, has recorded it on the all-Krzywicki "Alchemy" CD (Albany Records). Listen to snippets of each movement here. For advanced performers. Dur.: 17'

Harmony in Blue and Gold
Three C Flutes (1st doubles Piccolo) and Alto Flute
Ewazen’s monumental flute quartet was composed for Femme Flutale and premiered at the 2008 Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair. Its four movements were inspired by James McNeill Whistler’s “Peacock Room” at the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer Gallery – a room full of paintings featuring peacocks, and interior design showcasing blue and white porcelain, an integrated room that Whistler called “Harmony in Blue and Gold.” Ewazen’s ornate textures and impressionist moods express this unique environment through his musical world of sounds and lines. A Pastoral Musick
Two Flutes & Piano
A Pastoral Musick was originally scored for two violins and harpsichord, written for an early music group in 2007. Circumstances changed, and the work was never performed. Baksa revisited his earlier composition in 2012, changing the instrumentation to two flutes and piano, arguably a more natural setting. Beginning with gentle waves of 6/8 rhythm, the one movement work lives up to its title throughout. For advanced performers. Dur.: 7'

Johann Sebastian Bach
Sinfonia from Cantata No. 29
Arranged by Paige Dashner Long
Flute Choir
Traditionally performed by solo organ, Bach’s Sinfonia from Cantata No. 29 is arranged here for flute choir, with the piccolo parts closely following how an organist would perform the music. This arrangement has interesting textural and dynamic contrast, despite few dynamic markings, which Long creates through thoughtful scoring of different flute parts playing in various registers of the flute range. This arrangement was premiered in July of 2009 by the New England Conservatory Summer Metropolitan Flute Festival Orchestra in the New England Conservatory’s renowned Jordan Hall. For advanced players.

6 Sonatas for 2 Flutes (or Violins)
Edited by Jochen Reutter
Notes on interpretation by Susanne Schrage
Two Flutes (or Violins)
Georg Philipp Telemann's Six Sonatas for Two Flutes, also known as Flute Duets, Op. 2, are dedicated to two young music lovers and appeal to students and music enthusiasts alike. The pieces foster the ability to practice musical interpretation as well as express a playful love of music-making. The sonatas can alternatively be performed on the violin. The new Vienna Urtext Edition is based on Telemann's original print as well as two earlier editions, granting insight into the contemporary ornamentation practice. Further suggestions for the performance are given in the notes on interpretation by Susanne Schrage. The layout of the new edition is cleanly designed and page-turns are avoided. A proper foundation has been laid for both a historically informed performance and a relaxed bout of music-making. For intermediate-level players.

"Anyone who has had to endure bad Christmas music arrangements for an entire holiday season will be singing Hallelujah. These pieces are extremely traditional and at the same time made fresh by the use of counterpoint and imaginative harmonic treatment. The two flute parts blend nicely and sound good together... This collection is highly recommended for the performer and the teacher." (Flute Talk, November 2012) |
