Prolific composer Chen Yi began her musical career as a violinist, and she has now written a performance piece for the violin student, in loving tribute to her native Beijing. The violin’s part in From Old Peking Folklore imitates the fingering, bowing, style, and spirit of traditional Chinese music and instruments, and is orchestrated in such a way that the duet sounds like Jing Yun Da Gu, the folk music of her home area. Commissioned by the Music Teachers Association of California as a competition piece. For advanced players. Duration: 5’

Nikos Skalkottas Sonate for Violin Solo Violin Solo
A half century after his death, an air of obscurity still surrounds both the life and work of Nikos Skalkottas, the most significant Greek composer. Sonate für Geige allein was written in the summer of 1925 while Skalkottas studied with Kurt Weill and Phillipp Jarnach, and the sonata seems absolutely typical of the intellectually and musically radical mood of the time. Fresh, spare, mischievous, dissonant, tempermental and with a lively sense of humor, Sonate was clearly influenced by Jarnach as Skalkottas harks back to baroque forms and structures. The second and third movements imitate a minuet and a bourée, while in the closing fugue the young composer demonstrates his ability to mesh two relatively independent melodies together. This autograph text edition contains the composer’s own fingerings and bowing indications, and his suggestions provide valuable insight to his musical intentions.

Luise Adolpha Le Beau Sonate, Op. 17 Transcribed and Edited by Susan Pickett
Viola and Piano
Hildegard Publishing presents a transcription for viola of Luise Adolpha Le Beau’s Sonate, Op. 17, originally written for cello and piano (494-02850). Written in formal classical style, this lovely sonata gives way to soaring, romantic impulses and stark key changes, supported by a driving piano accompaniment. The piano accompaniment is a reprint of the impressively accurate 1878 edition, and the viola part is newly engraved and transposed from the cello part, with discrepancies reconciled by the editor. Behzad Ranjbaran Shiraz Violin, Cello, and Piano
Theodore Presser Co. 114-41321 • $35.00 Add to Cart
An ode to the city of Shiraz in southern Iran, many of Behzad Ranjbaran’s melodic, rhythmic, and musical characters are inspired by Persian culture and its vocal and instrumental music. Movement one, “The Weeping Willow”, was influenced by the composer’s vision of three poets in a gentle but heated poetic discourse, with a musical phrase beginning with one instrument and then circulated and repeated in a refined exchange. The second movement refers to a river in Shiraz often cited in Iranian poetry. The composer elaborates: “As the opening [of the second movement] descends into the whispering murmur of water waves, it soon builds to climactic crashing chords, all pointing to the vitality of life represented by the river. There is also allusion to the playful character of folk music with irregular rhythmic patterns, repeated short melodies, and jesting pizzicato sections….propelling the piece to an energetic conclusion.”

Charles E. Ives Variations on "America" Arranged by Daniel Dorff
Violin Part edited by Diane Monroe
Violin and Piano
Theodore Presser Company has adapted Charles E. Ives’s Variations on “America” for violin and piano. Ives wrote this piece as a teenager for solo organ, and it was published in 1949 as a result of support from E. Power Biggs, a prominent concert organist and recording artist. While orchestrations of this piece are standard for concert band and orchestra, we have also published it in many successful arrangements for instruments such as flute, trumpet, and solo piano. This setting for violin and piano was adapted from the flute version by Presser editor and composer Daniel Dorff, and the violin part was transcribed by well-known jazz violinist and concert artist Diane Munroe. Appropriate for both advanced students and professional players.

Arvo Pärt Da Pacem Domine String Quartet
Pärt's "Prayer for Peace" has been recorded and performed many times in its choral setting, and should quickly become a favorite of string quartets. Paul Hillier, Pärt's long-time collaborator, describes the piece: "Each pitch is carefully placed in position like stones in a Zen garden." Reviewers struggle to capture the work in phrases such as "almost motionless" and "utmost austerity and stillness," yet the quickly growing numbers of Pärt's fans don't question - they just sit back and soak it all in. Da pacem Domine, while not technically demanding, is challenging in its blending of sonority.

Schnabel is immediately known as perhaps the finest touring pianist of his day, one whose performances of Beethoven's concerti are still prized today. At great odds with his choice in performance, Schnabel's own compositions were wholly different.
