Katherine Hoover Clowning Around
Four Flutes, optional Alto Flute, optional Percussion
Hoover's latest opus for multiflutes is presented as a quartet, but is designed for any number of flutes. In fact, its first appearance was in Central Park (New York), and its first performance was at the 2011 NFA Convention, with all attendees invited to join in. An optional alto flute part was added, as well as a percussion line. Hoover even suggests that, "with the steady rhythm and light nature of this piece," the percussion part may be better performed by a tap dancer! For intermediate to advanced.
Katherine Hoover Ayres (Based on songs by John Dowland)
Soprano Saxophone and Piano
Katherine Hoover chose to arrange three Elizabethan lute songs by English Renaissance composer John Dowland for soprano saxophone after she heard the instrument played in a cathedral and was struck by its beautiful vocal quality. From the composer: “I have treated [these songs] in somewhat varying ways; counterpoint in the first, some variations in the second, and rhythmic play in the last, always being informed by the original song and/or words. These songs were commonly called Airs, or ‘Ayres,’ in the spelling of the time.” Songs included are “Can She Excuse My Wrongs,” “Weep No More Sad Fountains,” and “Fine Knacks for Ladies.” For advanced players.

Katherine Hoover Etudes for Flute

Metronome marking for No. 2 should be c. 72.

Katherine Hoover Toccata
Piano solo
Katherine Hoover’s Toccata for solo piano is distinctly American, with chords and rhythms influenced by jazz and popular sources. This work also features shifting rhythms and short references to musical ancestors in its middle section, according to the composer. For advanced players.
According to the composer, Thin Ice is meant to evoke “fear that we will tumble into the freezing dark, into truly hostile territory.” She also realized that “thin ice is also linked with possibility; with taking a chance, stepping into the unknown, considering what may be disdained or even shocking to others, personally or professionally… and going ahead.” Thin Ice received its American premiere on April 16, 2010 at St. Peter’s Church in New York City and was performed by Mirian Conti. For advanced players.

Katherine Hoover Journey
Bassoon and Piano
From Papagena Press, we have a new work for bassoon with piano from Katherine Hoover. Commissioned by a consortium of bassoonists organized by bassoon virtuoso Peter Kolkay, to whom the piece is dedicated. The jazz-tinged Journey reflects its name, beginning with an inward, thoughtful first movement, progressing to a playful conversation between the two voices in the second movement, and ending with an intense, reflective third movement. Journey was premiered in October of 2009 by Kolkay and pianist Alexandra Nguyen in Panama City, Panama. For advanced players.

Katherine Hoover Mountain and Mesa
Flute and Piano
Hoover's Mountain and Mesa is a three-in-one. Exploring the different sounds of flute around the world, her three movements are built around the gypsy music of Eastern Europe (Hungarian Lassù), a Hopi Lullaby of Native America, and Dizi Dance in the style of the Chinese folk music. This delightful new triad was premiered at the 2009 National Flute Association convention by Mimi Stillman and Jeremy Denk. For advanced performers.

Concertante "Dragon Court"
for Flute Ensemble
"The first and final movements incorporate jazzy, syncopated rhythms and chords that support solos featuring piccolo, concert C, and alto flute. The middle movement’s continuously shifting chords eventually give way to gently rolling 16th-note lines on top. The movement rises in intensity near the end before fading out to a final piccolo flourish." -- Rosene Rohrer, for NFAonline.org

Peace is the Way
Flutes & Alto Flutes
In this arrangement for multiflutes of the original treble chorus setting, a four-note phrase, “Peace Is the Way”, is layered repeatedly, one after another, throughout the eight parts, building slowly into sustained chords and a whispered final prayer. Inspired by the quote from A.J. Muste, “There is no way to peace; peace is the way.”
