How refreshing it is, when a composer has an intimate knowledge of the very instruments for which he composes. How joyful it is, when that composer constantly seeks to break new ground, to push the instrument to new capabilities.
William Kraft, a long-time orchestral timpanist, has also been just such a composer - highly respected and lauded, who still manages to push the artistic envelope |
His Concerto for Timpani has become the orchestral work that every timpanist wants to play. So, naturally, when Michael Tilson Thomas and David Herbert, timpanist for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, needed a new orchestral work to showcase Herbert's skills, they turned to William Kraft.
His second Concerto for Timpani, XIII / The Grand Encounter, revolves around a newly constructed "sonic cockpit" of 15 timpani, arranged in two levels. As such, the performance is as visually entertaining as it is aurally gratifying. We invite you to sample Mr. .Kraft's handiwork with the help of the YouTube community.
