Fingerings

An amazing little book — if only for the fingerings! Gippo is happy to share his secrets, the result of a lifetime of study and performance. He provides the traditional piccolo fingerings along with many alternatives - lessons learned in his years of piccolo mastery with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.

The first not-so-secret secret — most of the fingerings for the piccolo were inherited from its larger cousin, the flute. While this may have been a good idea in the beginning, these non-piccolo-specific fingerings are often inadequate and unworkable, especially in an ensemble setting. With a focus on blend and sonority, Gippo, with the assistance of Morgan Williams, lays out plenty of alternative fingerings and encourages piccoloists to try them out, find the one that works best.

An example:

Trill Fingerings

Along with these all-important fingerings are the all-important TRILL fingerings, compiled by Williams.

Therese Wacker, D.M.A. provides an excellent and thorough history of the piccolo, along with an overview of its use in chamber, orchestral, and concert band works. There follows an exhaustive and comprehensive list of works for piccolo, polished and presented by Tammy Sue Kirk, everything from piccolo solos to Gippo's favorite, piccolo with band. Readers are especially encouraged to update these lists for future editions of the book.

The resource guide for every piccoloist!

Teachers, especially, will find this little book highly useful for their flute students turning to the piccolo. What a time-saver — students can get a head start on the fingerings, freeing up valuable lesson time. The Complete Piccolo just may let your students hit the ground running!
