King of Prussia, PA — One of the flute world’s most prolific and successful composers, Gary Schocker continues to deliver fresh and inventive repertoire for flute players, and this new crop of solos and duets at various ability levels from Theodore Presser Company is no exception. Written for solo flute and piano, the contrastingly languid and lively Ollie and Me (114-41363 • $9.95) was penned for flutist and photographer Michael Bowyer, whose feline friend, Ollie, graces the cover of this two-movement piece. With the solo Nach Bach (114-41372 • $9.95), Schocker pays tribute to one of his favorite composers, reflecting many characteristics associated with Bach, such as even 16th-note melodies and a lively, bouncy feel. Rounding out these impressive solos, Schocker has arranged the well-loved Korean folk song Arirang (114-41366 • $4.95) for beginner flute and piano, adding an ornamental introduction and featuring sprightly interplay between the two instruments.
For two flutes, Schocker gives us the delightful Flutey Tales (114-41361 • $9.95). Tinged with a renaissance flavor, the three movements entitled “Courtly Gossip”, “Wanderers”, and “Royal Personage” are full of lively musical interplay. Diverse Duets (114-41362 • $12.95) is a collection of 13 flute duets running the complete emotional gamut with pieces such as “Mercurial,” “Flippant,” “Foreboding” and of course, “The End!” Each piece stands alone comfortably, but they may also be combined for an exciting concert program. Finally, as a follow-up to his successful Three Dances for Two Flutes, Gary Schocker has penned Three More Dances for Two Flutes (114-41365 • $18.95), entitled “Swallow That Goldfish,” “Smoke,” and “Scherzo No-no.” All three exhibit his playful, quirky style that flutists have come to love!
