Theodore Presser Company Presents
New Trumpet Method: Lips of Steel

King of Prussia, PA Theodore Presser Company has set out to address the oft-underserved area of endurance and strength in trumpet technique. Leading Twin Cities trumpet pedagogue David Baldwin, a prominent member of the International Trumpet Guild, has created Lips of Steel (444-41027 • $19.95), a book of etudes packed full of exercises for building stamina and strengthening the embouchure. Playing with musicality while maintaining the strength to do so is a vital aspect of trumpet technique, and has yet to be undertaken fully in method-book form until now. Inspired by friend and colleague Greg Alley, longtime trumpet section leader of the United States Military Band, Baldwin appropriated existing compositions for practice use, with the idea that students would be more willing to practice etudes that are equally tuneful and functional. As an added bonus, the book includes Baldwin’s “Seven Secrets of Endurance” as well as his ten-part warm-up and embouchure conditioner exercises. After 35 years of successful use with his students, Baldwin’s exercises are a true gift to aspiring trumpet players. Lips of Steel is sure to become an essential part of the trumpeter’s curriculum.

David Baldwin is Professor of Trumpet at the University of Minnesota School of Music in Minneapolis. He is an active soloist, ensemble player, composer, arranger and teacher. He has over 100 arrangements and compositions with many leading publishers and has received a Bachelor of Music degree from Baldwin-Wallace College and MM, MMA, and DMA degrees from Yale University. From 1969 until 1971, Baldwin was a member of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, New York. He is also founding Secretary and a past member of the Board of Directors of the International Trumpet Guild. Dr. Baldwin's teachers include Robert Nagel, Raymond Crisara, William Vacchiano, Bernard Adelstein, Charles Gorham and Eric Duro. In Minnesota, he has performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra and the Bach Chamber Players of St. Paul.
