Theodore Presser Company Publishes Valerie Coleman’s
Danza de la Mariposa for Flute
Danza de la MariposaKing of Prussia, PA – Theodore Presser Company proudly announces the release of Valerie Coleman’s Danza de la Mariposa (114-41504 — $6.95) for flute, a rhythmic, melodic tone poem, giving the listener a tour of South America. Inspired by the various species of butterflies inhabiting the continent, this work is full of rich color, with butterflies dancing and weaving in syncopated rhythms while alternating between the feel of 3 over 4 throughout. Its slower sections pay homage to the beautiful and sorrowful sounds in the style of Yaravi, a Peruvian lament song. The melodies and rhythm eventually evolve into the spirit and syncopation of Argentinean concert tango, and the conclusion returns to the feel of Yaravi. For advanced players.

Composer and flutist Valerie Coleman is a distinct new voice in American music and the resident composer, flutist, and founder of the Grammy nominated wind quintet Imani Winds. Her performances and works are heard regularly on classical radio stations throughout the country. She is a recipient of Meet The Composer’s 2003 Edward and Sally Van Lier Memorial Fund Award, the Wombwell Kentucky Award for study at the Aspen Music Festival, and the Michelle E. Sahm Award for flutists. From making her flute/composer debut at Carnegie Hall in 2004, to having a feature article in the spring 2008 Flutist Quarterly magazine, Valerie is quickly becoming one of today’s leading flutists. She has given flute master classes at several colleges and secondary schools throughout the country: SUNY Purchase, Columbus State, UMass Amherst and more. She has been a composer/flutist in residence with Young Audiences NYC, Chenango Music Festival, Allegheny Music Festival, and recently completed a mentorship with the Brooklyn Philharmonic. She studied flute with Julius Baker, Alan Weiss, and Mark Sparks; composition with Martin Amlin and Randall Woolf; and has served on the faculty of The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program and Interschool Orchestras of New York. She currently resides in NYC with her husband, Jonathan Page, who is a songwriter and producer.
