Theodore Presser Company Releases
Two New Keyboard Works by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich |
King of Prussia, PA — Theodore Presser Company is honored to announce the releases of two new keyboard publications by the esteemed Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, appropriate for students and professionals. Zwilich made her name in the world of recital keyboard works with the popular Peanuts® Gallery series, featuring the characters of Charles Schulz. The first of these two new pieces is Lament (140-40106 • $5.95), composed in memory of Judith Arron, executive and artistic director of Carnegie Hall for more than twenty years, where Zwilich held tenure as composer-in-residence from 1995 until 1999. It is also available in an arrangement for cello and piano (144-40419), which is the version premiered by Arron’s son Edward on cello in 2000 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A Poem for Elliott (140-40106 • $5.95) is a short, contemplative exploration composed in honor of the 99th birthday of the composer’s former teacher Elliott Carter, and received its world premiere in New York at Symphony Space in 2007. Piano students and professionals will be thrilled to add new publications by Zwilich to their library of performance pieces.
A prolific composer in virtually all media, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s works have been performed by most of the leading American orchestras and by major ensembles abroad. Her music first came to public attention when Pierre Boulez conducted her Symposium for Orchestra at Juilliard (1975), but it was the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for the Symphony No. 1 that brought her instantly into international focus. Commissions, major performances and recordings soon followed: the Symphony No. 2 (Cello Symphony), premiered by Edo de Waart and the San Francisco Symphony; Symphony No. 3, written for the New York Philharmonic’s 150th anniversary; Symphony No. 4 "The Gardens" (with chorus), commissioned by Michigan State University and the subject of a PBS documentary seen nationally; the Juilliard-commissioned Symphony No. 5 (Concerto for Orchestra) premiered at Carnegie Hall under James Conlon's direction, and more.
