We owe Chopin a debt. His music allowed us to survive the worst moments, and in the periods of hope extols Polish culture all over the world. We owe the author to publish his work in the form he intended to. This is the goal of the National Edition: to pay off a Nation’s debt to Chopin. — Jan Ekier, from the Frydryck Chopin Academy of Music)
The National Edition, founded in 1959, has but one goal: to provide the edition of Chopin’s works as Chopin intended them, and, by so doing, to honor Poland’s greatest composer.
The National Edition is an ongoing research project, gathering together all available source materials and producing definitive publications. Ekier’s team uses the latest techniques to assess the composer’s intentions and relates this to modern pianos and performance. Each volume includes an abridged source commentary and performance commentary, along with snippets of relevant correspondence about the pieces. PWM also offers a free download, the Introduction to the National Edition, in PDF (229 pages, 2.74MB, English edition).
The National Edition is a source edition, a critical edition, and a practical edition, and the finest edition of Chopin’s works available today.
The National Editionis recommended for all contestants in the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, as per the competition rulebook.
