Fernando Sor
Method for Guitar
Translated, edited, and with commentary by Matanya Ophee
Guitar
Matanya Ophee has reworked an 1832 translation of Fernando Sor’s Method for Guitar to reflect more accurately the pedagogical thought of the original text. This edition contains not only discussions of the parts of the guitar and proper position with original artwork, but uses musical excerpts to demonstrate exercises in technique. A true gem from the past that proves to be just as useful and helpful to classical guitarists today as it was during the nineteenth century.

Arranged by Scott Tennant
Guitar Quartet
Dirait-on is the final movement in Morten Lauridsen’s choral cycle, Les Chansons des Roses, based on poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. Dirait-on is written in the style of a French folk song and its popularity inspired Scott Tennant of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet to ask for a guitar arrangement. | Background
Barrios published almost nothing in his lifetime, and he left few manuscripts, but he was a pioneer of recording. Virtually all of the modern published editions of his music (and the recordings that were made from them) are based on transcriptions from his extant recordings. But early recording technology sometimes required that a piece be played over and over again in order to make a run of several hundred pressings. This is why the music on one recording sometimes differs noticeably from another, even though both have identical labels and dates. The performer simply played the same piece differently in the morning than he did in the afternoon — changing tempo, improvising, embellishing. The result is a profusion of confusing variants and conflicting editions.
This new edition from Tuscany Publications is based on a rare group of autograph manuscripts from 1912-1927, with the composer's own fingering, that the Uruguayan guitarist and Barrios scholar César Amaro has collected. It contains some of the earliest and most authoritative versions of several of the composer's best loved pieces, including La Catedral and Primavera Vals, but it also contains a number of rare pieces (several of which are not in the "complete works"), including the heretofore lost four-movement masterpiece Leyenda Guaraní, which survives only in a unique manuscript carefully copied by a disciple.
This edition should be essential to every guitarist who wishes to see what Barrios was thinking when he wrote these pieces, and wishes to understand his complex approach to performing them. And those who have purchased the "complete works" need this volume to make their collection truly complete. (Richard M. Long, publisher) |

Dionisio Aguado
Lessons, Exercises, and Etudes from the 1826 Escuela de Guitarra
Edited by Matanya Ophee
Guitar solo
This volume is a collection of exercises, lessons and etudes extracted from the second edition of Spanish classical guitarist and composer Dionisio Aguado’s Escuela of 1826. Stripping all text from this guitar method creates a progressively graduated system of teaching which is similar in its construction to Bartók’s Mikrokosmos, in that it provides teachers with good teaching material, rather than instilling a method of a teaching. As a result, it is useful in any program of guitar education, regardless of the teacher’s approach to pedagogy or his/her attachment to any particular philosophy or method book. For all guitarists, beginner to advanced!

Gaspar Sanz
Preludio - Fuga - Jácaras - Pavanas - Canarios
Karl Scheit Guitar Edition
Guitar solo
This is an album of pieces for the Baroque guitar, penned in the 17th century by guitar composer and teacher Gaspar Sanz. As the sound of the Baroque guitar is quite different from the modern classical guitar, this edition makes an effort to retain and transfer the musical idiom of the guitarra española (as the Baroque guitar was known in its day), through the use of techniques such as the campanela and the use of ties. The comprehensive fingering is itneded to help players achieve as authentic a sound as possible. The fingering has been positioned vertically so that the notation is easy to read and is text-centered. For advanced players.

Arranged by Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya
Edited by Frédéric Zigante
Two Guitars
The second installment of this collection from Berben contains both transcriptions of Bach’s preludes and fugues from “The Well-Tempered Clavier” and original performance works for two guitars created by classical guitar masters Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya. This edition contains two separate guitar parts and a score, with exhaustive references and a thorough foreword. For advanced players.

Johann Sebastian Bach
The Presti-Lagoya Collection, Volume 3
Arranged by Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya
Edited by Frédéric Zigante
Two Guitars
Edizioni Berben has released another installment in The Presti-Lagoya Collection, carried out with the approval of Ida Presti’s and Alexandre Lagoya’s heirs and based on manuscripts used by the duo for concerts in the 1950s and 1960s. As Lagoya wrote them out without ever intending to publish them, these new editions correct discrepancies between the music and performance recordigs to make these arrangements playable by any guitarist wishing to perform them. Most fingerings are left up to interpretation, as the original manuscripts contained few, and instead are meant to be chosen according to the tone color desired by the guitarist. Volume 3 coveres Bach's English Suites Nos. 2 and 3 and French Suite No. 5. For advanced players.

Fernando Cruz Cordero
Six Divertissements
Introduced by Melanie Plesch
Guitar
Francis Cruz Cordero’s Six Divertissements are an excellent example of the transition between the Romantic and Classical periods as addressed by guitar players and composers of the time, in that they give way to lovely romantic impulses and adhere to some conservative structures at the same time. This is the first time these pieces have been made available since the mid-nineteenth century, and will prove to be an important addition to classical guitar repertoire. For advanced players.

for The New Scheit Edition
Guitar
A challenging example of the best of the Baroque guitar repertoire is this operatic and flourishing solo from de Murcia. For advanced guitarists.

Robert de Visée
Suite in D minor
Edited by Olaf van Gonnissen, Thomas Müller-Pering, and Johannes Monno
for The New Scheit Edition
Guitar
The editors turn here to an extract from de Visée's 1686 publication Livre de Pièces pour la Guittarre. Here, as well, many obstacles were overcome, from the "unorthodox tuning of the Baroque guitar," to the translation of sounds and gestures. The ten movements are presented in large, clear notation with critical notes for each. For advanced guitarists.

aus "La Gloire et l'Amour," Op. 105
Karl Scheit Guitar Edition
Guitar solo
19th-century Italian guitar composer wrote these variations on a popular opera of that time, La Gloire et l’Amour by François-Adrien Boieldieu, which premiered in Paris in 1816. Edited by Anne Ricquebourg
Arranged by Sabine Chefson
Harp
Esteemed French publisher Billaudot presents Volume 1 of its series of transcriptions of Bach’s 6 Suites, originally written for unaccompanied solo cello. Suites 1 and 2, contained in this volume, were edited by master harpist Anne Ricquebourg and transcribed by Sabine Chefson. They honor the original melodic structure of the cello composition but a few bass notes have been added for extra richness, and are transposed up one octave, as the original octave is too low for harp.
