PREFACE

This arrangement of Mozart’s SONATA IN G, K.283/189h, provides the flute and harp repertoire with a significant composition from the Classical era.

The sonata is the last in a set of five that Mozart likely began in Salzburg and completed in Munich in 1775. The most polished and sophisticated of the set, it remains among the most popular of what Mozart called his “difficult sonatas,” distinguishing these works from his earlier solo keyboard sonatas. The sonata was not published during Mozart’s lifetime, first appearing as part of the 1799 Breitkopf edition of Mozart’s works.

In transcribing the piano sonata for flute and harp, we aimed to express the stylistic intent of the keyboard original, using various editions of the work as our guide for historical accuracy. Because Mozart’s slurs indicate phrasing on an 18th-century piano, our slight adaptations of slurs occasionally vary from Mozart’s piano notation, to make the music idiomatic for modern flute and harp. In addition, articulations have been made consistent for parallel passages.

The few added dynamics are indicated by parentheses. Contrasting dynamics in the flute and harp, or between voices within the harp (e.g. Mvt. I, mm. 35-37), are deliberately planned to emphasize important lines or to achieve optimal balance between the two instruments.
