Chen Yi Let's Reach a New Height Chen Yi
Let's Reach a New Height
SATB Chorus, a cappella

Commissioned by Harold Rosenbaum and The New York Virtuoso Singers to celebrate their 25th anniversary season, Chen Yi has picked a traditional Chinese poem full of optimism and collaborative spirit to wish the choir many happy returns. The choral writing juxtaposes poetic lines in English with Chinese nonsense syllables. Dur.: 3'

I Hear the Siren's Call Chen Yi
I Hear the Siren's Call
SATB Chorus, a cappella

Commissioned and recorded by Chanticleer to celebrate its 35th season, I Hear the Siren's Call is composed only using Chinese nonsense syllables to portray mythological drama. Dangerously alluring sirens are represented by high sopranos, echoed by the worksongs of sailors in the ships below. As the sailors draw near, their anticipation builds to nearly overshadow the sirens’ song, building to a climactic shipwreck, after which one solitary siren sings a satisfied melody. Dur.: 2'15"

Stucky Take Him, Earth Steven Stucky
Take Him, Earth
In Memoriam J.F.K.
SATB Chorus, Piano reduction

When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the ACDA, offered Stucky the Brock Memorial Commission, it was decided that the text would commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, since the annual convention would take place in Dallas of that year. To that end, Stucky chose four different but pertinent texts to honor the occasion, although never referencing JFK by name. Take Him, Earth was premiered at the ACDA convention in March, 2013. Originally scored for chorus and chamber ensemble of nine instruments (available on a rental basis), Take Him, Earth is presented here in piano reduction. For advanced choirs. Dur.: 13'

It is worth noting that the original forces, who had been rehearsing for the premiere, had to bow out at the last moment. Because of sequester cuts, the members of different choruses of the armed forces were not allowed to make the trip to Dallas. With less than three days before the premiere date, the ACDA put out a call to accomplished singers to volunteer for the premiere performance.

"About 40 singers rallied to the cause immediately and I must tell you that their singing was exceptional, and highly artistic and expressive. No one on the planet would have guessed that these amazing singers had not seen these scores until about 48-72 hours before the premiere of the Stucky on Thursday night. I am amazed by what they achieved- they had only one rehearsal on each piece!" (Paul Carey blog)

Zwilich Memorial Ellen Taaffe Zwilich
Memorial
for the Victims of the Sandy Hook Massacre

Children's Chorus and SATB Chorus, a cappella

Zwilich's Memorial begins with the Requiem aeternam text in the mixed chorus, but soon introduces a sung recitation of the names of the child victims by the children's chorus. The effect of the overlay is heartfelt grief and a powerful evocation. The closing dona nobis pacem is especially effective. Dur.: 5'30"

Wolfgang Rihm (b.1952) has written more then 400 compositions in all areas, and has developed a keen interest in architecture, painting, philosophy, and more, all of which are used as inspiration for his many works. Hymn for a New Land was written for a 2001 Spring Revels production with an immigration theme. The Revels were created in 1971 by John Langstaff and his daughter Carol, who staged a celebration of the rituals each culture has to mark the rebirth of the year. After the first Christmas Revels at Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre, a community of “Revelers” grew across the country, presenting seasonal celebration-performances all over the United States. These professional productions are set in a wide range of cultures and eras, from an English parlor to a Mexican village, and feature adults and children’s choruses, instrumentalists and great artists from around the world.

This particular piece was written for a Revel that honored the Irish, Italian and Eastern European Jewish families who crowded aboard ships, sharing songs, dances, and stories from their homelands as they passed the time during their difficult sea voyage. Hymn for a New Land opens with children’s voices singing thankfully as they first see the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, and the other adults soon join in. The central text, “The stone which the builders refused is become the headstone of the corner,” from Psalm 118, acknowledges the contributions that immigrants bring to their adopted nation. For beginning to intermediate-level choirs. Dur.: 2’30” Instrumental score and parts are sold separately (392-03100A - $50.00).

Adolphus HailstorkWe are pleased to announce a cycle of four new spiritual settings from the esteemed Dr. Adolphus Hailstork, Goin’ Home: Songs for Sister Lisa.

From the blog of Opera Roanoke: "The four spirituals are densely packed portraits resonant with the black church tradition... Weaving together a fabric of history and presence, pain and struggle, exile and homecoming, Goin’ Home is an engaging musical canvas whose complex palette is challenging as it is rewarding. It is a resounding affirmation of a life whose impact cannot be measured, and continues to be felt."

Read more about these new choral settings at artsongupdated.com and the blog by Scott Williamson of Opera Roanoke.

Gordon Autumn Valentine Ricky Ian Gordon
Autumn Valentine
Soprano, Baritone, Piano

Gordon's Autumn Valentine was created in collaboration with the premiering artists: soprano Angelina Réaux, baritone Michael Sokol, and director Kieth Warner, all poring over the short stories and poems of Dorothy Parker. In the end, Gordon composed a cycle of eleven songs and duets which tell the tale of a failed marriage. Unlike traditional opera, in Autumn Valentine, no one dies. Selected songs already appear on YouTube - listen as Audra McDonald sings The Red Dress, while Gordon, himself, performs Bric-a-Brac in a beautiful video.

Martin Deux Chansons populaires Frank Martin
Deux Chansons populaires
Voice and Piano

Swiss composer Frank Martin was exposed to the two folk songs during a trip into the mountains, and was immediately taken with them. He took pains to transcribe the verses and melodies, then wrote piano accompaniments to complete the settings. The two songs, Chanson de métamorphoses and Il faut partir pour l'Angleterre, are lighter fare from Martin, but fine additions to the vocalist's repertoire. For intermediate to advanced.

Mooch the Magnificent
A Children’s Opera in One Act

Commissioned, premiered, and frequently performed by Roundabout Opera for Kids, Mooch the Magnificent is a 40-minute opera (with a 30-minute alternate version), scored for SATB principal roles, extra speaking and non-speaking parts, and an ensemble of Clarinet, Cello, Percussion, and Piano. It may also be performed in piano reduction.

In a zoo of the future, populated not by animals but by robots in animal form, Mooch, an orphan girl, convinces the zookeeper to hire her to fix the robots when they break down, but she is actually reprogramming them to be increasingly wild. The opera takes place in a dome-covered city that is part of a worldwide network of such cities, connected by travel tubes, sealed off from the outside. The time is late twenty-first century, after human beings, afraid of the wilds, have moved indoors.

Berio Altra voce Luciano Berio
Altra Voce
Flute, Mezzo Soprano, Live Electronics

From Berio's program notes: "In one episode, namely Il Campo (The Field), from my azione musicale Cronaca del Luogo, there is a virtual love duet. Two voices and several instruments 'fall in love' and follow one another in a constantly renewing relationship.

"As we all know, in true polyphony each voice contributes to the whole yet retains its own identity, if not complete autonomy. In Altra voce I have liberated one voice (mezzo-soprano) and one instrument (alto flute) from the whole and developed their respective autonomies and harmonic premises by, among other means, using live electronics."

Now published in score and parts, with complete and detailed technical instructions for electronics. For advanced performers.

Animals and Insects Louis Gruenberg
Animals and Insects (Tierbilder), Op. 22
on text by Vachel Lindsay
Medium Voice and Piano

Louis Gruenberg (1884–1964) came to the United States with his parents in the late 19th century, and in the early 1920s he studied with Ferruccio Busoni in Berlin, who also encouraged him to compose. In the late 1930s, Gruenberg moved to Hollywood, where he became a successful film score composer. The song collection Animals and Insects was written in the early 1920s, but its tonal language was too advanced for the American taste in music at the time, so it has been republished. Gruenberg adopted the humorous, folk-singing tone of poems by Vachel Lindsay, at times giving them popular, cabaret-style rhythms and also creating a more abstract sound. For advanced singers.

Six Songs of a Fairy Tale Princess Karol Szymanowski
Sechs Lieder der Märchenprinzessin
(6 Songs of a Fairy-Tale Princess), Op. 31

With arranging by Sakari Oramo (Nos. 3, 5, 6)
High Voice and Piano

The composition of the Princess Songs marked the beginning of a particularly productive phase for Karol Szymanowski. Based on a series of poems by his sister Zofia, Szymanowski composed this colorful and glittering music in 1915; its exotic, lyrical and fantastical world is expressed in the coloratura soprano’s many passages, featuring trills and rapid runs. The princess herself remains mysteriously undefined. Love is her only recurrent theme. By withdrawing into internal fantasy during a time of war, Szymanowski found an opportunity to retreat into a dream world, and composing songs remained an important part of his lifelong work; in 1933 he arranged three of the six Princess Songs for voice and orchestra. (Sakari Oramo orchestrated the other three and conducted their first performance in 2012). (Translation on UE website by Grant Chorley.)

Strewwelpeterlieder Lowell Liebermann
Struwwelpeterlieder
Text by Dr. Heinrich Hoffman
Soprano Voice, Viola, and Piano

The Struwwelpeter (Slovenly Peter) book of poems was a 19th-century German collection intended to scare children out of bad habits. The macabre nature of these verses inspired Lowell Liebermann to set three of the poems for Soprano, Viola, and Piano, resulting in the Struwwelpeterlieder (Slovenly Peter Songs). The publication includes the authentic 19th-century cover illustration, and translations of the poems. For advanced musicians.

Ricky Ian Gordon
Rappahannock County
A Theatrical Song Cycle about the Civil War
Lyrics and Concept by Mark Campbell

Co-commissioned by the Virginia Arts Festival, Virginia Opera, the Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond, and Texas Performing Arts at the University of Texas at Austin, Rapahannock County pairs the outstanding and celebrated talents of composer Ricky Ian Gordon and librettist Mark Campbell. Rappahannock County is a theatrical song cycle that captures key emotional, sociological, and historical moments in the Civil War.

Much of the text was inspired by actual events and drawn from diaries, letters, and other accounts. The narrative follows the lines of history, from secession in 1861 to defeat in 1865, and is in five parts. Although the story is centered geographically in Virginia, its themes are universal to the Civil War. It is described as such by Wes Blomster of Opera Today: “The piece has the sense of a lens closing in on a spectrum of individuals and their feelings around slavery and morality in a profound and poignant way...’ The acclaim accorded Rappahannock County by the 2,200 people who packed Norfolk’s Harrison Opera House for the premiere made clear that Gordon and Campbell had achieved their goal.”

Elfrida Andrée
Svanen ("Swan")
Edited by Susan Pickett
Voice, Violin, and Piano (or Harp)

It was illegal in mid-19th century Sweden for a woman to act as church organist. Elfrida Andrée, a Swedish woman who was also an organist, was responsible for overturning this ban, an early effort that led to a lifetime of music-making and, ultimately, an impressive body of work. Of the more than 100 Andrée compositions, editor Susan Pickett was especially taken with Svanen, which appears to date back to the 1880s. The present edition is based primarily upon the first publication (1890) and Andrée's own orchestral version, retaining the Böttiger text in French, German, and Swedish, along with critical notes. For intermediate to advanced performers.

Fidelity
Tenor (or Soprano), Baritone, and Piano

Fidelity is Leisner's contemplation of a long-term monogamous relationship, from its tentative beginnings through various stages of intensification to thoughts of betrayal and, finally, to an eternal intertwining of souls. It sets eight poems by May Sarton, Walt Whitman, Kenneth Patchen, William Meredith, Wendell Berry, and Leslie Marmon Silko, and may be sung in its original version for tenor and baritone or in its heterosexual version for soprano and baritone. For advanced performers. Dur.: 25'

A more ambitious project is Leisner's Confiding, a 30-minute vocal cycle with piano or guitar. Guitar part of medium difficulty." Dur.: 10' Confiding is now available in three versions (below). Fernando Sor
Ariettina
Transcribed by Matanya Ophee
Voice, Guitar and Piano

The dedicatee of this Ariettina, Zinaida Aleksandrovna Volkonskaya (1792-1862), was a famous Russian princess who was known as a writer, poet, composer and singer with a renowned mezzo-soprano voice. In October 11, 1825, the Princess Volkonskaya gave a private party in her house in Moscow on the occasion of her birthday. This was a gala event that included several orchestral and theatrical presentations by many artists. We know that Sor appeared in that event as a singer, singing a duet with a certain Mlle. Akulova. The poem O dolce amor di Zefiro, written by Italian poet Angela Veronese Mantovani (1778–1847), makes up the text of this work. This edition is based on an autograph manuscript. For an advanced vocalist and players.

The Daughter of Capulet
Voice and Piano

Prolific vocal composer Thomas Pasatieri gives us a new monodrama for voice and piano, based on Juliet’s most famous soliloquys from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The piece follows Juliet from her famous lament of Romeo’s relation to the Montagues (“O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?”) to the tragic end of her life (“O happy dagger! This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die”). A lovely, passionate work that truly showcases both technical and expressive skills.

Alexander Zemlinsky
Eine florentinische Tragödie (A Florentine Tragedy)
Edited by Antony Beaumont
Soli, Orchestra

If, as the editor states, Zemlinsky's A Florentine Tragedy is "one of the milestones of 20th century music theatre," its path to acceptance was rather arduous. Beginning with the troubled text by Oscar Wilde, Zemlinsky dove into the work "as if in a fever." A problem arose in requesting the rights to Wilde's text, not helped by timing (and World War I), and this was but one impediment to its performance. The editor provides a complete history of the work, in historical context, along with critical commentary, which, itself is fascinating reading. There follows the complete piano-vocal score in the 1916 UE edition, with revisions in 2011. See also the new study score..

The Flow of Memory
Mezzo-Soprano, Flute, Bass Clarinet, Violin, Piano

An earlier work by a young Schickele, The Flow of Memory is a glimpse of what might have been, had the composer not developed into a different "voice." Atonal and a-tempo, the work is crafted for five almost individual performances by the ensemble, "each of whom proceeds in their own tempo," according to Schickele. The phrases surface and disappear, as fleeting as memory itself. For advanced performers. Dur.: c. 7'

Green Sneakers
Baritone, Empty Chair, String Quartet, and Piano

Green Sneakers is a work for solo baritone voice with string quartet from the critically acclaimed Ricky Ian Gordon. Grown from a cycle of poems dedicated to the composer’s departed love, Green Sneakers is a raw and touching ode to the life he shared and the process of grief. The string quartet narrates the story as much as the baritone voice, creating a mini-opera, complete with an empty chair, employed as a prop, and a piano played by the singer at the conclusion. According to Gordon, “I suppose I wanted to end the piece with not only a lullaby, but a celebration of what we had together.” String quartet parts are available on rental. Dur: 1 hour.

Hija del Amor (Berceuse y Aria from Cecilia Valdés)
Edited by Evan Hause
Soprano and Piano

Cecilia Valdés, hailed as "the best Latin American novel of the 19th century," serves as the source for Gonzalo Roig's musical setting. At least one critic has hailed Roig's work as an improvement upon the tempo of the written work, with far better build-up, suited well to the operatic stage. Or, as Leo Brouwer is quoted, "The zarzuela Cecilia Valdes can be more pleasing to listen to than Verdi, and at times more profound than Meyerbeer or Bellini." Evan Hause presents this aria for soprano in piano reduction. Dur.: 4'

Robert Baksa Robert Baksa
Letters from Emily, Volume 2
Voice and Piano

Robert Baksa has a deep appreciation of the writings of Emily Dickinson, and vocal arts practitioners have come to appreciate that fact. His musical lines are eminently singable, and each song communicates effectively Baksa's own understanding of the text.

"Baksa reveals her personal intimacy with her subjects... Where Copland's songs project the emotions of the poems outward as unto a large screen, Baksa's look inward to the private stirrings of the heart —drama versus lyricism... The voice brings the text to life in flowing vocal lines that are enhanced by the musical fabric that the piano weaves for each song... the melodic lines are expressive of the words." --Judith Carmen, Journal of Singing (March/April, 2008)

Angel Island Passages
Children's Chorus (SSAA) and String Quartet

Often called "the Ellis Island of the West," Angel Island in San Francisco was used as an immigration station in the first half of the 20th century, processing some one million Asian immigrants. Because of U.S. policy of the time, many spent years on Angel Island awaiting entry. Recently named a National Historical Landmark, Angel Island and its history is the inspiration behind Chen Yi's Angel Island Passages, commissioned by the San Francisco Girls Chorus. Chen explores the experiences of the immigrants, even using poems carved in the walls, to express the mood, the patient yearning, and the ultimate release and embrace of a new country. Angel Island Passages was premiered June 4-5, 2010 by the SFGC and the Cypress String Quartet at the San Francisco Conservatory. For advanced performers. Dur.: 15'

P.D.Q. Bach
Long Live the King
Edited, without regard to consequences, by Prof. Peter Schickele
SAB Chorus (or SATB Chorus or STB Soli), a cappella

Theodore Presser Company announces the release of its first P.D.Q. Bach octavo in about ten years, a hilarious and satirical ode to the King of France, who was beheaded during the French Revolution, complete with sound effects. The historical tie-in makes Long Live the King appropriate for high school choir in particular. The program notes have a fictitious story about how the composer found an old manuscript written by his departed uncle, with a note - “I have just composed a major choral work in honor of the recent revolution in France, called Long Live the King; the title, I hasten to assure you, is meant to be ironic – my sympathies are always with the people, especially the people who run taverns. The invention of the guillotine gives, I think you will agree, new meaning to the term “head of state.” For intermediate choirs.

Peter Schickele
My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord
SATB Chorus, Piano and Strings

Commissioned by the composer’s college music instructor, William Reese, for his choir in Rockland County, New York, Schickele’s setting of the first part of the Magnificat text. It was premiered in April of 1998 by the Rockland Camerata. As most of Schickele’s choral works are secular, this is a rare and truly lovely contribution to the sacred choral library from a well-known composer. From Schickele’s notes: “In the outer sections of the work the three musical entities (chorus, piano, and the strings) are given overlapping homophonic phrases much in the manner of Monteverdi’s and the Gabrielis’ antiphonal choir pieces in early 17th-century Venice, although, of course, the harmonic language is completely different. The middle sections feature lyrical vocal lines over repeated instrumental figures, leading to a climactic ending.” String parts available on rental. Duration: 4’30”

Ives Psalm 42 Charles Ives
Psalm 42 (As Pants the Hart)
Charles Ives Society Critical Edition, edited by Robert A.M. Ross
SATB Chorus, Tenor or Soprano solo, Organ

The earliest of Ives’s many psalm settings, Psalm 42 (As Pants the Hart) was said to be premiered when the composer was 16, with sketches beginning several years earlier. The setting is a fairly traditional verse anthem with organ interludes and a vocal solo, illustrating Ives’s early mainstream writing, and occasional glimpses of the young composer’s penchant for surprise. Dur. 3’30”

Inspired by and composed upon four evocative poems of Paul Pines, Daniel Asia’s The She Set is a choral cycle whose movements are titled "Isis in Despair" (celebrating the myth of Isis and Osiris), "Orpheus" (celebrating Eurydice), the longer third movement title "She," of broader and more abstract celebration, capped by the epilogue "Prayer Before Drowning." Adolphus Hailstork
Three Dunbar Hymns
on text by Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906)

Hailstork considers the poetry of Dunbar, widely hailed as the first eminent African-American poet, whose works were featured in the great poetry journals of the day. Fluent in a variety of writing styles, his incorporation of turn-of-the-century black dialect brought him the most acclaim and the most debate within literary circles.

Presser presents three chorals by Hailstork, using poems entitled "Hymns" by Dunbar. When Storms Arise is the centerpiece of Hailstork's cantata, Crispus Attucks, Lead Gently, Lord appears in his song-cycle, Paul Laurence Dunbar: Common Ground. The third setting, Little Lamb, is dedicated to Nina Scott and her Renaissance High School Choir of Detroit, Michigan.

All are accessible to college and advanced high school choirs.

SATB chorus, a cappella

Commissioned by the Ithaca College School of Music, Ranjbaran’s new work for a cappella chorus sets the words of beloved Persian poet Sa’di to music. We Are One was chosen to be included in the Voyager spacecraft as the representation of the poet’s native Iran, and its beautiful text illustrates the bond of humanity and the importance of empathy for others: “Human beings are all members of one family / Created with one common essence and soul / If any of us suffers or bears pain / We all know and share the suffering together / To not feel sympathy for human suffering / Is to be less than human.” This work would be ideal for 9/11 memorial concerts. Um Mitternacht
By Gustav Mahler
Text by Friedrich Rückert
Transcribed for Nine Voices by Clytus Gottwald

Translated as “at midnight,” this song was written in the summer of 1901 in Maiernigg am Wörthersee, Austria, where Mahler spent his vacations while working as director of the Vienna Court Opera. According to the foreword: “As with almost all of his songs, Um Mitternacht is also actively connected with the composition of his symphonies. This song may not have originated as part of a symphony as many others did, but Mahler added the orchestration a little later, more or less transcribing it with symphonic standards in mind… It is musically obvious that Mahler aimed for a certain amount of reduction in this song. Just a few themes are joined together to make a certain frame, without padding this out with sound. This… is what makes this piece so appealing. Transcription and interpretation are called upon to express this bleakness without suppressing the impulse to reduce it musically.” For advanced ensembles.

Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen
By Gustav Mahler
Text from Des Knaben Wunderhorn
For 8-Part Choir, transcribed by Clytus Gottwald

Using text from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth’s Magic Horn), Mahler wrote this song, which translates as “where the lovely trumpets play,” while on vacation in South Tyrol, Austria. Focusing on the fate of young lovers when one is called away to war, this song tells the story powerfully with marching rhythms, but remains restrained in volume, calling for pianissimo dynamics almost completely throughout. It should be performed as if in a dream or a nightmare, a challenging but worthwhile task for advanced groups.

After performing Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols with her choir, choral director and composer Elinor A. Because Stephen Foster made a conscious decision to write “people’s music,” many historians and critics have labeled him a musician of limited talent with no more than a natural gift for memorable tunes. In reality, he had a sound musical training. Beautiful Dreamer, written near the end of his life, was an example of his familiarity with the Italian school of song: graceful melodic lines, expressive appoggiaturas, and arpeggiated and strummed instruments. This arrangement, for SSA chorus and keyboard, remains faithful to that style.

Stephen Foster
The Camptown Races
Arranged by Michael Levi
SATB Chorus, a cappella

The best known writer of popular songs in the 19th century who is still widely know today is Stephen Foster (1826-1864). One of his most popular, The Camptown Races, was written for the stage, introduced by the Christie Minstrels. The verses show Foster's creative and vivid imagery ("Then fly along like a railroad car, Runnin' a race with a shootin' star.") and have a feel of the exaggerated charm of a folk tale. It is one of the gems of the minstrel era.

Stephen Foster
The Camptown Races
Arranged by David Düsing
SSA Chorus and Keyboard

The lively Camp Town Races is related to the “call and response” songs found in African-American tunes. Years after Stephen Foster’s death, his brother said that the pronunciation of “doo dah” was not as we commonly know, but dah was pronounced like the “a” in dad.

Nelly Bly

SSA Chorus, a cappella

This delightful love song alludes in the first verse to “bring the broom along,” probably referring to the African-American wedding custom of “jumping the broom.” The singer’s affection for Nelly is shown in the verse, “heart warm as (a) cup of tea; And bigger than the sweet potato down in Tennessee.” Years after it was published, it was adopted as a campaign song for Abraham Lincoln.
