Two Carols By Elinor A. Armsby
SATB Voices, a cappella
After performing Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols with her choir, choral director and composer Elinor A. Armsby was inspired to set one of the texts from this collection, “I Sing of a Maiden,” to a more hushed, lullaby-like melody. In addition, she wrote music for “Tidings True” to accompany the first song as a gift to her choir, a joyous and lively piece. Though conceived as a set, the two carols may be performed together or separately, in any order.

P.D.Q. Bach Long Live the King
Edited, without regard to consequences, by Prof. Peter Schickele
SAB Chorus (or SATB Chorus or STB Soli), a cappella
Theodore Presser Company announces the release of its first P.D.Q. Bach octavo in about ten years, a hilarious and satirical ode to the King of France, who was beheaded during the French Revolution, complete with sound effects. The historical tie-in makes Long Live the King appropriate for high school choir in particular. The program notes have a fictitious story about how the composer found an old manuscript written by his departed uncle, with a note - “I have just composed a major choral work in honor of the recent revolution in France, called Long Live the King; the title, I hasten to assure you, is meant to be ironic – my sympathies are always with the people, especially the people who run taverns. The invention of the guillotine gives, I think you will agree, new meaning to the term “head of state.” For intermediate choirs.

Commissioned by Durham University in the United Kingdom for its 175th anniversary in 2007, Pärt’s Morning Star was premiered in London by the Durham University choir that same year. Peter Schickele My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord
SATB Chorus, Piano and Strings
Commissioned by the composer’s college music instructor, William Reese, for his choir in Rockland County, New York, Schickele’s setting of the first part of the Magnificat text. It was premiered in April of 1998 by the Rockland Camerata. As most of Schickele’s choral works are secular, this is a rare and truly lovely contribution to the sacred choral library from a well-known composer. From Schickele’s notes: “In the outer sections of the work the three musical entities (chorus, piano, and the strings) are given overlapping homophonic phrases much in the manner of Monteverdi’s and the Gabrielis’ antiphonal choir pieces in early 17th-century Venice, although, of course, the harmonic language is completely different. The middle sections feature lyrical vocal lines over repeated instrumental figures, leading to a climactic ending.” String parts available on rental. Duration: 4’30”

Adolphus Hailstork Three Dunbar Hymns on text by Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906)
Hailstork considers the poetry of Dunbar, widely hailed as the first eminent African-American poet, whose works were featured in the great poetry journals of the day. Presser presents three chorals by Hailstork, using poems entitled "Hymns" by Dunbar. When Storms Arise is the centerpiece of Hailstork's cantata, Crispus Attucks, Lead Gently, Lord appears in his song-cycle, Paul Laurence Dunbar: Common Ground. Um Mitternacht By Gustav Mahler
Text by Friedrich Rückert
Transcribed for Nine Voices by Clytus Gottwald
Translated as “at midnight,” this song was written in the summer of 1901 in Maiernigg am Wörthersee, Austria, where Mahler spent his vacations while working as director of the Vienna Court Opera. According to the foreword: “As with almost all of his songs, Um Mitternacht is also actively connected with the composition of his symphonies. This song may not have originated as part of a symphony as many others did, but Mahler added the orchestration a little later, more or less transcribing it with symphonic standards in mind… It is musically obvious that Mahler aimed for a certain amount of reduction in this song. Just a few themes are joined together to make a certain frame, without padding this out with sound. This… is what makes this piece so appealing. Transcription and interpretation are called upon to express this bleakness without suppressing the impulse to reduce it musically.” For advanced ensembles.

Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen By Gustav Mahler
Text from Des Knaben Wunderhorn
For 8-Part Choir, transcribed by Clytus Gottwald
Using text from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth’s Magic Horn), Mahler wrote this song, which translates as “where the lovely trumpets play,” while on vacation in South Tyrol, Austria. Focusing on the fate of young lovers when one is called away to war, this song tells the story powerfully with marching rhythms, but remains restrained in volume, calling for pianissimo dynamics almost completely throughout. It should be performed as if in a dream or a nightmare, a challenging but worthwhile task for advanced groups.

Margaret R. Tucker Invitation SATB and Flute or Organ
Margaret Tucker has served long and well in the church community, one of the first Commissioned Ministers of Music in the United Church of Christ. She is also a published composer of hymns, and co-editor of Hymns of Truth & Light. Her Invitation, adapting text by British poet Israel Zangwill, serves well as both a wedding celebration or hymn of welcome. Layered and staggered voices build into the verse, the voices calm and welcoming. Some divisi in the upper voices, but not challenging.
