James Matheson
Violin Concerto
Violin and Orchestra
Matheson's Violin Concerto was co-commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and premiered by both orchestras. Written in three "traditional" movements (Caprice, Chaconne, Dance), the Concerto is a demanding and virtuosic composition for advanced performers. Listen to Matheson discussing the Concerto in a YouTube video, and read a review of the West Coast premiere here. We are pleased to concurrently make available the solo violin part with piano reduction. Dur.: 25'

Clint Needham
Urban Sprawl
Chamber Orchestra
Urban Sprawl grew directly from the composer's months-long search for a new home. In looking over many prospects, he began to wonder about the variety of home owners and their approaches to their wildly different dwellings, resulting in this "funky, jazzy, kitschy, and hopefully fun ode," as he describes it. Dur.: 6'30"

Steven Stucky
Silent Spring
Orchestra
Commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Manfred Honeck, Music Director, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. Because the book is "almost all science," Stucky says, he instead chose four books by Carson (including Silent Spring) as the base for his contemplative composition. "The entire work seized the thrust of Carson’s mid-century warning about chemical pollutants, but was arresting in a more general way for me. Mr. Stucky’s appropriate pessimism here didn’t discourage as much as it engendered a cathartic response to a subject that often numbs the soul. A brilliant, if unsettling, work." (Andrew Druckenbrod, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) Dur.: c.18'

Steven Stucky
Symphony
Orchestra
Commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic, Stucky approached his Symphony with some trepidation. The very word symphony evokes centuries of meaning, an almost ultimate weight for a composer. Stucky had early on written four symphonies, all of which have since been withdrawn. Now, he determined to embrace his own history with the symphonic tradition to bring forth a new narrative.
"Now 63, Mr. Stucky is hardly the first composer to be intimidated by the great heritage of the symphony, with its expectation of a piece that involves, as Mr. Stucky sees it, well-defined formal patterns and complex developmental techniques. Yet Mr. Stucky’s Symphony is a fairly modest piece, a 20-minute, colorfully orchestrated work in four parts, played without break. The music is quite graspable, to borrow a word from Mr. Stucky’s description. ... Mr. Stucky perhaps achieved his goal of writing a graspable symphony too well. I was engrossed in the work right through, and Mr. Gilbert drew an exciting performance from the orchestra. But the music may give away its secrets too readily." Anthony Iannaccone
Waiting for Sunrise on the Sound
Orchestra
The second in a set of three Recollections by Iannaccone, Waiting for Sunrise on the Sound represents recurring dreams of a youth spent on Long Island Sound and sometimes dangerous boating expeditions. When the sea and skies seemed about to doom the crew, the clouds would part and the waves would subside. In this orchestral and tonal setting, Iannaccone makes a concious effort to bridge the large ambience of the orchestral hall with a more intimate sound. Waiting for Sunrise was selected as one of five semi-finalists in the 2001 Masterprize competition, and is recorded on the Albany label (TROY 486). Dur.: 25'

Anthony Iannaccone
West End Express
Orchestra
The first of Iannaccone's Recollections series, West End Express is faster and more dazzling. "The composer made marvelous use of scoring that replicated the driving energy of the mechanical behemoth. Wheels clicking the rails juxtaposed with panoramic visual allusions of open spaces as well as dark, smothering tunnels. A sense of zipping along prevailed in Iannaccone's effective instrumental colorings. ...virile, hypnotic syncopation fused with brilliant brass." (Kalamazoo Gazette) Dur.: 35'

Carter Pann
My Brother's Brain (A Symphony for Band)
Wind Ensemble
On the heels of his Slalom, which has enjoyed numerous performances as a new staple for bands, Pann has created a major three-movement magnum opus, a "triptych of sound paintings," as he would describe it. My Brother's Brain encapsulates a lifetime appreciation of both uniqueness and similarity in a younger brother, through three stages of growth (child, facing demons, grace). My Brother's Brain was a joint commission by two dozen universities, which, itself, is high praise, indeed. For advanced ensembles.

Given the opportunity to create a concertante work for violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and the spirited New Century Chamber Orchestra, violinist-turned-composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich looked to the commedia dell’arte tradition for a special theatrical program. With movements depicting the Harlequin, Columbine, and Captain characters from Italian Renaissance romantic comedies, Zwilich has created a playful, charming, and dramatic work, also adding percussion surprises for extra color in the string orchestra. Gustav Mahler
Das Klagende Lied
Edited by Reinhold Kubik
Soli, Mixed Choir (SATB), Orchestra
Das Klagende Lied is based on poems written by the composer and was completed in 1880. It originally consisted of three movements which bore the following titles: Waldmärchen (A Tale from the Woods), Der Spielmann (The Minstrel), and Hochzeitsstück (Wedding Piece). The composer subjected the score to several revisions and eventually arrived at a version in which the first movement was omitted altogether, while the second and third movements lost their titles and were thoroughly reworked. This new version was published in 1899 by Weinberger and premiered under Mahler’s baton in Vienna in 1901. For advanced players.

Richard and Renée
Wind Band Select Series
Wind Symphony and Piano
Carter Pann’s Richard and Renée was written as a gift for two musician friends of his, Renée Kershaw and Dick Floyd. The first movement, “Renée’s Reply,” is a musical portrait of the time the composer spent with his friend in Italy. According to Pann, “the music strives for a poignancy inspired by this new event in their relationship accompanied by a backdrop so beautiful it defies words. A writer/composer (anyone, for that matter) cannot live on the Amalfi Coast and remain unchanged, unmarked.” The second movement, “Floyd’s Fantastic Five-Alarm Foxy Frolic,” is in a playful ragtime style, with an ending that the composer describes as “over the top.” Dur.: 13’ See the Full Score (PDF, 2MB)

Dragon Rhyme
Wind Band Select Series
Symphonic Band
From the composer: “Dragon Rhyme for symphonic band is in two movements: “I. Mysteriously-Harmoniously,” and “II. Energetically.” The first movement is lyrical, and the second powerful. Featuring the basic intervals found in Beijing Opera music, the thematic material in both movements is matched, and used economically for development throughout the work. The instrumental texture is rich in colors, from transparent and delicate to angular and strong. Taking the image of the dragon, which is auspicious, fresh, and vivid, the music is layered and multidimensional. It symbolizes Eastern culture. When it meets the world, it becomes a part of the global family.” See the Full Score (PDF, 2.6MB)

Wind Ensemble Score
Castle Creek was written by Dan Welcher in celebration of the Aspen Music Festival’s 40th anniversary, and served as a special tribute to the Festival’s longtime President, Gordon Hardy. “Castle Creek” itself is a tributary of the Roaring Fork River on which the Aspen Music Festival campus (as well as Hardy’s home) is built. Gordon’s initials (G.A.H.) are used as the musical basis for the fanfare, which is centered on the ascending pitches G, A and B, and reflects the upward motion and positivity of the Aspen Music Festival itself. Written for the Southeastern Conference Band Directors Association, Dan Welcher’s Glacier is the fourth composition in his series inspired by national parks in the American West (following The Yellowstone Fires, Arches and Zion). Dan Welcher
Spumante
Arranged by Paul Bissell
Wind Ensemble Score
Dan Welcher’s Spumante for wind ensemble was commissioned by the Boston Pops and its conductor, Keith Lockhart, and premiered during the celebratory opening of their 1998 season. This later transcription for band by Paul Bissell in 1999 was premiered by the Dallas Wind Symphony in January of 2000, conducted by Dr. Kevin L. Sedatole. Spumante, named for an Italian sparkling wine, recalls the neoclassical style of the ’40s exemplified by composers such as William Schuman and Vincent Persichetti. It also employs inversion, a technique in which the first theme is simply turned inside-out and presented as a second theme. For advanced players. Duration: 7’

Lauren Bernofsky
Abendstern
String Orchestra
Bernofsky describes a near-religious experience in the hills of Bavaria, watching at dusk, as the darkness gathered over the landscape and a single bright star became brighter. This powerful imagery moved her to write Abenstern. Represented by a sustained E, the star slowly rises through the octaves, from bass to violins, while the musical landscape slowly subsides to the background. Brief, but potent, orchestral imagery. For intermediate to advanced. Dur.: 3'

"Sharp Objects," says Matheson, "explores strong, bracing contrasts. Loud gestures suddenly give way to quiet chords that are sonic artifacts of the louder gestures, sustaining the harmony almost like a piano’s damper pedal... [It] features several of the players in short solos, which sound against the background of shimmering string harmonies played by the other players. Eventually, the overall stillness of the piece gains in focus, leading to an energetic, if slightly abrupt, conclusion." Dur.: c.5'

Behzad Ranjbaran
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra
Violin and Orchestra
Trained as a violinist in his native Tehran, composer Behzad Ranjbaran eagerly drew inspiration from the traditional Persian kamancheh and its delicate, lyrical sound when creating his profoundly luscious and brilliant Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. This work was completed in 1994 and premiered in England by Joshua Bell, who also gave the first American and Canadian performances. The Concerto for Violin and Orchestra is the recipient of the Rudolf Nissim Award from ASCAP, and it was supported in part by a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts. Anthony Iannaccone
Dancing on Vesuvius
Orchestral Study Score
Anthony Iannaccone's newest orchestral work, Dancing on Vesuvius, is a 12½-minute work for standard-size orchestra that was premiered in November 2008 by the Dearborn (MI) Symphony. The title refers to a metaphor made by Alban Berg in a 1933 letter to his wife, in which Berg compared the carefree decadence of German society while in a growing crisis to dancing on a volcano. Iannaccone's work draws inspiration from Berg's observation, balancing dancing optimism with a dark underlying turbulence that ultimately erupts and engulfs the spirited dance.

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich
Septet
Piano Trio and String Quartet
Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Septet is the first major work written for this combination of instruments, and the pioneering process was greatly enjoyed by the composer: “While the instrumentation of the Septet provides an almost orchestral palette, and it was interesting to explore that, I love the idea of seven artist-performers, each of whom can be a stunning virtuoso one moment and a thoughtful partner the next, and I relish the electricity that results from those shifting roles.” Septet was written for the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio and the Miami String Quartet, to whom it is dedicated. Sinfonia
Eight Voices, Orchestra
Published in a new oblong study score, Berio's 1968 tribute to Leonard Bernstein and the 125th Anniversary of the New York Philharmonic is a masterwork of contemporary composition. 38 years after writing his Third Symphony, Arvo Pärt returned with a Fourth, a total departure from his earlier struggles with 12-tone composition. Commissioned in part by Los Angeles Philharmonic and premiered in January 2009 under the direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Symphony No. 4 'Los Angeles' brings "glorious" and "gorgeous" from the reviewers. Ellen Taaffe Zwilich
Symphony No. 5 (Concerto for Orchestra)
Score
Commissioned by the Juilliard School, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Symphony No. 5 (Concerto for Orchestra) in four movements has already garnered dazzling critical acclaim with Steve Smith of the New York Times, who names it "…a mix of neo-Classical craftsmanship, roiling energy and tonal accessibility.” A Juilliard alumna, Zwilich was especially pleased to compose for the Juilliard Orchestra and its conductor, James Conlon. Consisting of four contrasting movements, Symphony No. 5, according to the composer, “treats the ensemble like a huge chamber ensemble, in which each player or section can be a brilliant soloist one moment and a sensitive partner the next.” Performance materials are available on rental. Pierre Boulez
Tombeau
Full Orchestra
To celebrate Pierre Boulez’s 85th birthday and the 50th anniversary of Tombeau’s world première, the Paul Sacher Foundation and Universal Edition are now publishing the two original manuscripts of the score for the first time: the pencil draft and a fair copy in different colored inks. These fine examples of high-quality reproductions are also the earliest evidence of Boulez’s friendship with Paul Sacher, to whom the composer presented the scores in the early 1960s. The facsimiles are prefaced by an introduction, which places the work in an historical and aesthetic context and takes a look at the compositional techniques used. It is illustrated by a selection of manuscripts from different stages of the creative process, as well as other related documents. See UE's sales brochure (PDF).

James Matheson
True South
Orchestra
Commissioned and premiered by the New York Philharmonic, True South captures James Matheson’s fascination with reinterpreting traditional harmony and rhythm. Energetic, colorful, and grounded by underlying lyricism, the work transcends its scoring for chamber orchestra with textures that are sonorous, and evocative. A loosely structured set of variations flows through moments of brightness and darkness, sparseness and density, motion and stillness. The work’s title evokes an inverted globe, presenting an opportunity for examining our preconceptions about the world, its politics and inhabitants.
