Arches: An Impression for Concert Band
Concert Band Score
Arches is the latest installment from Elkan-Vogel’s series of band pieces for the university-level performing group. From the composer’s program notes: “Arches is a descriptive single-movement work. The title is double-edged — on one side, the music depicts the peaceful and airy grandeur of Arches National Park in Utah. On the other side, the musical structure can be considered an ‘arch-within-an-arch.’”

Dan Welcher
Castle Creek
arranged by Paul Bissell
Wind Ensemble Score
Castle Creek was written by Dan Welcher in celebration of the Aspen Music Festival’s 40th anniversary, and served as a special tribute to the Festival’s longtime President, Gordon Hardy. “Castle Creek” itself is a tributary of the Roaring Fork River on which the Aspen Music Festival campus (as well as Hardy’s home) is built. Gordon’s initials (G.A.H.) are used as the musical basis for the fanfare, which is centered on the ascending pitches G, A and B, and reflects the upward motion and positivity of the Aspen Music Festival itself. Arturo Márquez
Danzón No. 2
Transcribed by Oliver Nickel for Symphonic Band
In its original orchestral form, Danzón No. 2 has enjoyed significant popularity on performance programs everywhere. The danzón, itself, was Cuban-born, from a natural synthesis of Spanish, British, and French dance forms. As Márquez has discovered, "the apparent lightness of the danzón is only like a visiting card for a type of music full of sensuality and qualitative seriousness." Of Danzón No. 2, Joseph Stevenson writes for All Music Guide, "The composition is built on a beautiful, elegant main theme, stated at the outset on clarinet. It preserves both the traditional rondo form and the tendency to begin in a state of restraint and erupt into passionate rhythms later." Oliver Nickel's arrangement for concert band is suitable for Grade 5 and above.

Dan Welcher
Glacier
Wind Ensemble Score
Written for the Southeastern Conference Band Directors Association, Dan Welcher’s Glacier is the fourth composition in his series inspired by national parks in the American West (following The Yellowstone Fires, Arches and Zion). The feeling of icy stillness permeates the piece’s opening, and as percussive, brittle motives enter, a sense of warming eventually melts the ice and brings new life, only to be frozen over once again as the glaciers prevail. For advanced players. Duration: 10’

Slalom
Wind Symphony (Score)
Carter Pann's popular ode to the thrill of downhill skiing, Slalom is now being published as a study score for wind symphony. Spanning several sections including "First Run," "Open Meadow, Champagne Powder," "Straight Down, TUCK," and "On One Ski, Gyrating" among others, Carter Pann explains in his Slalom Program Notes, "The work is performed at a severe tempo throughout showcasing the symphony's volatility and endurance. The work is presented as a collection of scenes and events one might come by on the slopes. In this way Slalom shares its programmatic feature with that of Richard Strauss' Alpine Symphony. Dan Welcher
Spumante
Arranged by Paul Bissell
Wind Ensemble Score
Dan Welcher’s Spumante for wind ensemble was commissioned by the Boston Pops and its conductor, Keith Lockhart, and premiered during the celebratory opening of their 1998 season. This later transcription for band by Paul Bissell in 1999 was premiered by the Dallas Wind Symphony in January of 2000, conducted by Dr. Kevin L. Sedatole. Spumante, named for an Italian sparkling wine, recalls the neoclassical style of the ’40s exemplified by composers such as William Schuman and Vincent Persichetti. It also employs inversion, a technique in which the first theme is simply turned inside-out and presented as a second theme. For advanced players. Duration: 7’

O Magnum Mysterium is our best-selling choral piece and published by Peermusic Classical. Last year it became our best-selling concert band piece (arranged by H. Robert Reynolds). Now, this incredible haunting work becomes a string orchestra wonder, in the hands of Sandra Dackow. The perfect introduction to Lauridsen’s incredible output, O Magnum Mysterium has become one of the most-often-recorded works in our library, and with good reason. Anthony Iannaccone
Dancing on Vesuvius
Orchestral Study Score
Anthony Iannaccone's newest orchestral work, Dancing on Vesuvius, is a 12½-minute work for standard-size orchestra that was premiered in November 2008 by the Dearborn (MI) Symphony. The title refers to a metaphor made by Alban Berg in a 1933 letter to his wife, in which Berg compared the carefree decadence of German society while in a growing crisis to dancing on a volcano. Iannaccone's work draws inspiration from Berg's observation, balancing dancing optimism with a dark underlying turbulence that ultimately erupts and engulfs the spirited dance.

Piano Trio and String Quartet
Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Septet is the first major work written for this combination of instruments, and the pioneering process was greatly enjoyed by the composer: “While the instrumentation of the Septet provides an almost orchestral palette, and it was interesting to explore that, I love the idea of seven artist-performers, each of whom can be a stunning virtuoso one moment and a thoughtful partner the next, and I relish the electricity that results from those shifting roles.” Septet was written for the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio and the Miami String Quartet, to whom it is dedicated. Symphony No. 5 (Concerto for Orchestra)
Score
Commissioned by the Juilliard School, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Symphony No. 5 (Concerto for Orchestra) in four movements has already garnered dazzling critical acclaim with Steve Smith of the New York Times, who names it "…a mix of neo-Classical craftsmanship, roiling energy and tonal accessibility.” A Juilliard alumna, Zwilich was especially pleased to compose for the Juilliard Orchestra and its conductor, James Conlon. Consisting of four contrasting movements, Symphony No. 5, according to the composer, “treats the ensemble like a huge chamber ensemble, in which each player or section can be a brilliant soloist one moment and a sensitive partner the next.” Performance materials are available on rental. For advanced ensembles. Duration: 24’
