Florent Héau 30 Studies After J.S. Bach Clarinet (2 Volumes)
Billaudot gives us two volumes of studies for the clarinet, containing intermediate to advanced etudes based on various keyboard pieces (French Suite, Well-tempered Clavier) and the Lute Pieces by Bach. ORCHESTRAL EXCERPTS FOR OBOE
Selected and Annotated by John Ferrillo
Piano Transcriptions by Martha Rearick
The fifth book in our line of Orchestral Excerpts addresses the audition process for orchestral oboists, by one of the world's finest!
John Ferrillo, Principal Oboist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, knows full well the agony, the angst, and the anticipation of the audition arena. His overview of his own experiences and his advice on yours is fascinating reading. Ferrillo also goes into some detail on the use of "long-tone exercises" and "melodic simplification," techniques you can use in everyday music-making. Included also is his advice on "Baroque and Classical Performance Practice," invaluable insights from an expert.
With this foundation, Ferrillo presents the most-often-requested audition pieces, all of which you should know. Throughout, he gives his thoughts on the preparation, presentation and performance of each excerpt.
As with the other books in our Orchestral Excerpts line, the oboe solo parts are faithfully reproduced in the most-often-used editions - some are fine, some not. But these are the editions from which you would be expected to play, and we believe that it's best that you see them now - not later!
Here again, Martha Rearick has transcribed the orchestral background into studio rehearsal accompaniments, retaining the flavor and dynamics of the instruments surrounding the oboe parts. All of it is geared toward maximizing your practice time and building the confidence you need as you approach your orchestral opportunity.

Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda Divertissement for Oboe and Orchestra, Op.58 Oboe and Piano reduction
Kalliwoda (1801 – 1866) was first and foremost a highly gifted violin virtuoso, but he also wrote several memorable works for oboe at a period in music history during which composers had almost completely abandoned the oboe as a solo instrument. Originally written for oboe and orchestra, Divertissement, Op. 58 has until now remained unpublished and was assumed lost. But owing to a recent discovery of a complete set of parts for the piece, oboe repertoire is now enriched by the presentation of Kalliwoda’s significant work of the early Romantic period.

Peter Schickele The Emperor's New Clothes for Narrator, Oboe, Violin, Viola, Violoncello, and Piano
With much enthusiasm, Schickele accepted a suggestion from the quintet An Die Musik to adapt the classic The Emperor's New Clothes as a performance piece for their Timeless Tales series. Each character in the story is identified by a theme, and the mixture of characters leads to the corresponding mixture of themes - "everything from minimalist classical sounds to boogie-woogie piano."

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich Quartet for Oboe and Strings
A commission by the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival (Chantal Juillet, Music Director) has brought about an important new addition to the oboist’s repertoire. Set in two movements (duration: 14’), the new Zwilich Quartet is expectedly demanding and unexpectedly rewarding, as described by Mr. Dalton (below).
"The handsome two-movement piece did something rare among contemporary works. It left one wanting more. It’s obvious why musicians are drawn to Zwilich’s scores - they are modern and abstract yet cogent and expressive. And from a performance perspective, the music is both challenging and flattering. The new quartet is full of ideas that exploit the interplay of instruments in their varied ranges." - Joseph Dalton, Albany Times Union (NY)

Felix Mendelssohn Romances sans paroles Volume 1, Op. 19: Romances 1, 2, 4, 5, 6
Volume 3, Op. 38: Romances 13 to 18
Volume 5, Opp. 62 and 67: Romances 25, 26, 29 to 32, and 34
Originally for Piano
Arranged for Oboe and Piano by David Walter
Walter confesses to a personal affinity for Mendelssohn’s Romances - “like so many little gems, miniature miracles of inventiveness and sensibility.” He believes, rightly, that a) they are well suited for transcription from the original piano solo and that b) they add perfectly to the “relatively poor Romantic repertoire for oboe.” Despite the original groupings of six per opus number, Walter points out that they are independent pieces, which can be programmed in any arrangement. Required skill level varies through the Romances, with some approachable by 4th (or even 3rd) year students.

(Set of two performance scores)
"Musical portraits of Hootie, a handsome and elegant 20-pound tuxedo cat, and Tiki, a petite bengal princess. Hootie's music is generally in a slow pulse with lyrical 16ths flowing, just as Hootie is pensive and outwardly still, while clearly being very busy inside. The final phrase is marked snoozendo poco a poco. After a "peacefully lurking" introduction, Tiki's remarkable showcat grace and playful lightness are set as an effervescent scherzo, including some double-tonguing (after all, her name is ti-ki), a bit of fluttertonguing as Tiki can sound herself, and with a regally strutted circus march in the middle of the scherzo." P.D.Q. Bach Fugue of the Volga Boatmen, S. 1-2-3-Grunt Edited by Prof. Peter Schickele
Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, English Horn, 2 Bassoons, Contrabassoon
Here's an interesting new take by P.D.Q. Bach on a traditional Russian folk song. Written for the unusual instrumentation of piccolo, flute, oboe, English horn, two bassoons, and contrabassoon, there is a descending "grunt" added to the serious fugue in the song, giving it a complicated and amusing twist. When the theme is played inverted or backwards, the grunts follow suit! Fugue of the Volga Boatmen, S. 1-2-3-Grunt is one of very few new publications from P.D.Q. Bach, so this piece is a special opportunity. For high school-level players. Duration: 2’ 40”

Peter Schickele Joy to the World, especially out-of-work musicians Suite for Six Gig-impaired Instruments Piccolo, English Horn, Eb Clarinet, Baritone Saxophone,
Contrabassoon, Gong (also Wind Chimes)
Peter Schickele considers the least employed among musicians, those who play the lesser-called-for instruments listed above. In his desire to put these good instruments to profitable use, he has arranged four well-known Christmas melodies for just this combination of players, in hopes that they will find suitable holiday employment. The work consists of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, We Three Kings, and Jingle Bells. Let the festivities begin!

Matthew van Brink Shabu Shabu Flute and Bb Clarinet
An exciting new piece by the dynamic, young composer Matthew Van Brink, Shabu Shabu is now published in two editions—this original duet for two flutes composed for Thomas Robertello and Rachel Taratoot Ciraldo, and the composer's transcription for flute and clarinet as featured at the 2007 National Flute Association convention. "Shabu Shabu" is a Japanese delicacy named after the bubbling sound created when cooked, and the title of these duets reflects the canonic bubbling of the instruments. A challenging, original piece for the college or professional player. Duration: 4' [MP3 available on www.matthewvanbrink.com]

Derek Bermel Wanderings for Woodwind Quintet
Bermel takes inspiration from two striking scenes - the cusp between Jewish and Muslim life in old Jerusalem and the ancient music-making of remote African lands. These disparate elements are reflected in the two movements of Wanderings, "Gift of Life" and "Two Songs of Nandom." The first describes the intense juxtaposition, duality, and even humor of these two societies living side-by-side, while the second explores the translation of African instruments and sounds to the language of the Western wind quintet. Striking, moving, intelligent, and new, Wanderings presents a sonic landscape portrait for advanced performers.
