Background
Barrios published almost nothing in his lifetime, and he left few manuscripts, but he was a pioneer of recording. Virtually all of the modern published editions of his music (and the recordings that were made from them) are based on transcriptions from his extant recordings. But early recording technology sometimes required that a piece be played over and over again in order to make a run of several hundred pressings. This is why the music on one recording sometimes differs noticeably from another, even though both have identical labels and dates. The performer simply played the same piece differently in the morning than he did in the afternoon — changing tempo, improvising, embellishing. The result is a profusion of confusing variants and conflicting editions.
This new edition from Tuscany Publications is based on a rare group of autograph manuscripts from 1912-1927, with the composer's own fingering, that the Uruguayan guitarist and Barrios scholar César Amaro has collected. It contains some of the earliest and most authoritative versions of several of the composer's best loved pieces, including La Catedral and Primavera Vals, but it also contains a number of rare pieces (several of which are not in the "complete works"), including the heretofore lost four-movement masterpiece Leyenda Guaraní, which survives only in a unique manuscript carefully copied by a disciple.
This edition should be essential to every guitarist who wishes to see what Barrios was thinking when he wrote these pieces, and wishes to understand his complex approach to performing them. And those who have purchased the "complete works" need this volume to make their collection truly complete. (Richard M. Long, publisher)

The Russian Collection, Volume X:
Selected Concert Works for the
Russian Seven-String Guitar Guitar solo
Volume Ten, like the previous books in the Russian Collection series, is intended to serve as a general introduction to Russian seven-string guitar music, including concert repertoire, transcriptions, themes and variations, fantasias, and more. Suitable for players using standard guitars as well, this volume includes the original seven-string versions as well as a few works printed here for the first time in the West. (The six-string guitar is tuned in fourths, while the Russian seven-string guitar is tuned in thirds). Most six-string guitar players acclimate quickly to playing in this tuning and are able to read the music without the aid of tablature. However, for newcomers, this edition is equipped with a generous layer of fingering.

Luigi Legnani Andante & Allegro from the Overture to William Tell by Rossini for solo Guitar
Legnani, an unparallelled guitarist of his time, was known to have created some 250 compositions and arrangements. Of the relative handful surviving in print today, this Andante & Allegro remains a favorite, an arrangement of the familiar passages from Rossini's last and best-known opera.

Nikola Starcevic Asiana V Guitar solo
Winner of the 2007 JoAnn Falletta International Composition Competition for Guitar, Asiana V is described by the composer as "part of a cycle called Asiana, which consists of five solo guitar pieces written in a similar style. As the title suggests, there are some elements of Asian music, recognizable in the use of the pentatonic scale, but it is actually a fusion of a few styles: neo-classical, neo-romantic, and jazz. Except for a lyrical part, the piece is dynamic, effective, with a lot of strong accents, especially on chords. The harmony is tonal. This piece requires a good technique, a powerful sound, and a disciplined use of articulation." A unique and colorful work from this prolific Serbian composer. For advanced classical guitar players.

Niccolò Paganini Concerto per chitarra ed archi, Secondo la Grand Sonata for Guitar and Strings
Orchestrated by Wolfgang Lendle
World-class guitarist Wolfgang Lendle looked upon the famous Paganini Grand Sonata for guitar and violin and envisioned a wholly-new guitar concerto. Read his thoughts and analysis in orchestrating a full string accompaniment to the original solo guitar part, then rejoice in the addition of a Paganini concerto to the comparable standard repertoire! Handsomely published by Editions Orphée, the new Concerto is packaged as a set of full score and (1) each of the string parts, with a separately available solo guitar part with rehearsal CD. Lendle’s changes to the guitar solo part are few, detailed neatly in his introduction, and the string parts are simple enough for student string orchestra or string quartet. Includes several cadenzas, offered in the spirit of the composer and the work.

Ian Krouse Da Chara (Two Friends) for Flute and Guitar
“Written in a form largely inspired by Paddy Maloney of the Chieftains,”
Da Chara weaves Krouse’s original melodies through the two
instruments. “The original air returns as a march, which
gradually picks up energy until it bubbles over into a wild
reel.” Krouse aims here for a traditional Irish sound, and
captures it through his own unique prism.

McCormick digs into
the early 19th century series of music journals, Arion, to bring to
light some of the finest examples of this art form. Choosing only the
German composers, he offers an excellent comparison with the
better-known composers in this genre ((Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, etc.)
by showing their immediate predecessors in the field. A handsome
volume, complete with brief descriptive biographies of the composers.

Johann Dubez Fantaisie on Hungarian Themes for Guitar
Edited by Matanya Ophee
Ophee has chosen this
little-known concert piece, originally written for the Viennese
10-string guitar, as his fourth entry in The Guitarist's
Repertoire. A challenging set of Hungarian motifs,
perhaps chief among them the Rákóczi March (a
version which [Ophee suggests] may have led to the adaptations of
Berlioz and Liszt). Ophee's background information and his enumeration
of modifications for performance on the 6-string guitar are priceless,
and his editing, as usual, exact.

Carlos Barrientos Periwinkle Memories Guitar solo
A solo classical guitar piece composed by Honduras-born Carlos Barrientos (b.1954) inspired by the most American of musical styles—the blues. Periwinkle Memories, a lightly swinging piece marked by delicate changes in tempo and touch. In explaining the name of the piece, the composer says, “I was struck by the purplish-hue of the periwinkle… some consider it an invasive weed, most admire its extraordinary beauty…it is a vibrant part of the American landscape, elegant, stubborn, and nearly native. Like the blues.” For the advanced player. Duration: 8' 30"

Editions Orphée here releases six excellent examples of de Fossa's penchant for transforming chamber works into guitar duos. Ferdinando Carulli Solo and Variations, Op. 107
on Nel cor più from La Molinara by Paisello for Guitar
Edited by Matanya Ophee
With the Carulli,
Ophee launches his new series The Guitarist's Repertoire,
a collection of works from the 19 th and early 20 th centuries that he
describes as "off-the-beaten-track." With the Solo and
Variations, Ophee introduces us to a Carulli that we may not
know - the virtuosic guitar composer, and a working of the very
familiar Nel cor più set apart from
its contemporaries (Sor, Giuliani) by Carulli's extensive solo
introduction (and several other elements, as discussed by Ophee). The
result is an excellent choice to open The Guitarist's
Repertoire series and one worthy of the attention of
classical guitarists everywhere.

Giulio Regondi Ten Etudes Revised and edited by Matanya Ophee
Guitar solo
As described by editor Matanya Ophee: "Since they first came to light in 1987, the Ten Etudes by Giulio Regondi (1822–1872) have become an integral part of the guitar repertoire all over the world. Their undisputed value was, and still is, not only their unique artistic excellence as paragons of a compositional inspiration seldom seen in guitar music of the nineteenth century, but also their function as didactic material in many teaching programs, both private and public. The present edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect a clearer picture of the harmony and a better depiction of the actual durations of the notes of the several voices. At the same time, a new layer of editorial fingering has been added, mainly to provide students and amateurs with easier access to this music." Complete with historical and performance notes. For intermediate to advanced players.
