Morten Lauridsen Cuatro Canciones (4 Songs on Poems by Federico Garcia Lorca) High Voice, Clarinet, Cello, Piano (Score and Parts)
Morten Lauridsen is today best known for his stunning choral writing in such best-selling titles as the moving O Magnum Mysterium, the delicate Dirait-on, and the eerily beautiful O Nata Lux. Musicians are rediscovering, however, that Lauridsen’s works cover a wide range of music. A particular favorite has been the Cuatro Canciones, previously available only as print-on-demand. The demand has demanded that this work now be published, and Peermusic proudly releases this handsome new edition.

Early Romantic Lieder with Guitar for Voice and Guitar
Compiled and Edited by John McCormick
McCormick digs into the early 19th century series of music journals, Arion, to bring to light some of the finest examples of this art form. Choosing only the German composers, he offers an excellent comparison with the better-known composers in this genre (Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, etc.), by showing works of their immediate predecessors in the field. A handsome volume, complete with brief descriptive biographies of the composers.
Artur Schnabel Frühe Lieder (Early Songs) for Voice and Piano
Artur Schnabel - the truly great 20th century pianist, known for performing all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas in one sitting. Artur Schnabel - the groundbreaking 20th century composer, universally praised by his peers, is far less familiar. In an excellent music review, New York Times writer Anthony Tommasini attempts to address this duality, this contradiction between Schnabel performer and Schnabel composer, and is left to sum up: “You were also left in awe of Schnabel's musical mind. He was one of music's great intellectuals. And what aroused his intellectual curiosity was playing Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart and Brahms -- and composing his own uncompromising works.” That Schnabel never performed his own works, never proactively promoted his own works, may explain in part why they are comparatively overlooked today, but those who study this music (Paul Zukofsky, Joel Krosnick, even Milton Babbitt, as per the review) come to appreciate the genius behind it. To further the music of Schnabel, the Schnabel Music Foundation was created, and Peermusic is proud to be the distributor of these publications.
The Early Songs “are characterized by simplicity, transparency, and warmth” (Werner Grünzweig, in the introduction) and represent Schnabel’s newly discovered art of self-restriction. An early and contemporary review of their performance brought raves about the lieder, and a glimpse of the great expectations for their composer.

Thomas Pasatieri The Hotel Casablanca Piano/Vocal Score
A new major opera from Pasatieri, commissioned by Sheri Greenawald, Director of the San Francisco Opera Center. "Casablanca has just enough opera majesty to satiate grand opera adherents and enough silliness to keep most audiences entertained. As a bonus, it’s in English." (Rich Copley, Copious Notes) "The work serves up two hours of efficient entertainment thanks to its superb source, tight plot, and crisply defined characters."

Robert Baksa Letters from Emily, Volume 1 Sixteen new songs to poems of Emily Dickinson Voice and Piano
Baksa has penned art songs from the poetry of Sara Teasdale, Ambrose Bierce, Dorothy Dow, and A.E. Housman, but unquestionably it is the work of Emily Dickinson that inspires him more. This first volume of eight new songs shows clearly the breadth of his compositional skills, each matched closely with the text it portrays. As much for the accompanist as the singer, Letters from Emily provides fresh new recital programming possibilities for advancing musicians. Download our PDF catalog of Robert Baksa's works (645KB).

Josephine Lang Lieder for Voice and Piano
edited by Harald Krebs
Hildegard Publishing Company continues its mission of bringing focus on the contributions of women composers throughout the centuries with two volumes of songs by Josephine Lang (1815-1880), "one of the most prolific women composers of Lieder in the 19th century." Harald and Sharon Krebs have devoted considerable time and energy in bringing this neglected composer back to light, with two volumes of selected Lieder, including background notes and critical commentary. For even more study of Lang's songs, Krebs and Krebs have written Josephine Lang: Her Life and Songs (with audio CD), available through Oxford University Press.
The two volumes presented here include a chronological discovery of Lang's art, from the age of 15 to shortly before her death. Volume One covers her early and developmental years, and Volume Two continues with songs written after her marriage to Reinhold Köstlin in 1846.

Lowell Liebermann Miss Lonelyhearts Opera Piano/Vocal Score
Music by Lowell Liebermann
Libretto by J. D. McClatchy
Based upon the novel by Nathanael West
Jay Nordlinger, in his review in The New York Sun of the world premiere of Miss Lonelyhearts, provides far more information about Liebermann’s new opera than we can here, but we will quote his first paragraph: “New York saw the premiere of a new opera on Wednesday night - Miss Lonelyhearts, by Lowell Liebermann. Mr. Liebermann and his librettist, J.D. McClatchy, have achieved a success: an opera that is worth seeing, hearing, and absorbing.” Of the music, Mr. Nordlinger writes, “The score is well paced and well crafted. It has energy and tension (though that tension is relieved). It is neither too long nor too short. And it is almost never dull.” Commissioned by The Juilliard School in commemoration if its centennial, Miss Lonelyhearts is enjoying a series of three well-received premieres - East Coast, West Coast, MidWest - across the United States, and is destined to become an important element of the rebirth of opera - particularly, American opera.

Arvo Pärt Credo Mixed Chorus, Piano, Orchestra (Piano reduction)
The music of Arvo Pärt, in particular his choral works, are finding an ever-increasing audience in the U.S. His Mother of God and Virgin and Magnificat rank high among our best-sellers in choral music. His Credo is an earlier work (1968), which has the added distinction of having been banned in the Soviet Union! An interesting and impressive contrast to Pärt's later works of a more austere style.

Dan Welcher I Dream a World for SATB Chorus, Cello, and Piano
In this excerpt from Welcher’s JFK: The Voice of Peace, the Langston Hughes text is used effectively above the “serene and mysterious” accompaniment of cello and piano. The message is timeless, made more inviting through Welcher’s gentle handling of his forces. The oratorio, itself, was premiered in 1999 by the Handel & Haydn Society, Daniel Beckwith, conductor.
Steven Stucky The Kingdom of God (In No Strange Land) for SATB Chorus, a cappella
This octavo was commissioned for the American Guild of Organists’ 2008 national convention, giving it great visibility with a large number of church musicians and choral directors. Its text comes from late-nineteenth century English poet Francis Thompson. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky has transformed this poem into a majestic, sacred choral arranged for mixed choir, with piano accompaniment for rehearsal only. Appropriate for high school or skilled church choirs.
Chen Yi Looking at the Sea for S.S.A. Chorus, a cappella

Adolphus Hailstork Missa Brevis for S.S.A.A. Chorus, a cappella
Missa Brevis is a fairly conventional work from Hailstork, whose style encompasses all aspects of his life as a musician. This is serious art music for professional performers, touching on African-American themes as well as Protestant church music, having spent many years of his life as a Unitarian minister. Written for female a cappella voices, Missa Brevis is excellent for concert use. Appropriate for high school or skilled church choirs.
Emma Lou Diemer O Viridissima Virga SSAA Chorus, Organ (Choral Score)
Diemer’s powerful writing brings life to this favorite text by Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), building the women’s chorus slowly to a punctuated fortissimo, before bringing the work down to a final, long and fading chord. The better high school or college choirs will enjoy the dynamics and flow of this sumptuous work, easily a centerpiece on the program. Latin text.

Brian Holmes Carol of the Field Mice arranged for SATB a cappella

Brian Holmes A Christmas Lullaby for SA Voices and Piano
Sweet and tender lullaby, using a poem by Eleanor Farjeon (probably best known for her Morning has broken). With a haunting melody, Holmes uses women's voices in unison, two-part, and in echo. Simple, and simply beautiful.
Brian Holmes I shall keep singing! for SSA(A) Voices and Harp or Piano
For this reaffirmation of the enduring human spirit, Holmes turns to a poem by the great Emily Dickinson, with music matching the more contemporary text. While most choirs will use a piano accompaniment, the women's voices are particularly well augmented with harp.
